WHAT: San Diego ASA Medical Cannabis Educational Rally and March

WHEN: 12/26/2011 – 2pm-5:30pm

WHERE: Corner of Newport Ave and Abbot Street in Ocean Beach, CA

The federal government has begun a crackdown on legitimate medical marijuana patients, caregivers, and providers. In San Diego alone as a result of Federal threats, hundreds of safe access locations have been shut down causing legitimate patients to go without their doctor recommended medicine as well as helping crime rise in our City.

The San Diego Chapter of Americans for Safe Access strongly opposes the Federal commandeering and intervention into state law and is organizing a medical cannabis educational rally!

The 26th will be a day of medical cannabis action and education! The rally will start at 2pm with several speakers as well as a teach in on the beach! There will be a march at 4pm and the rally will end at 5:30pm

Medical marijuana protest at Civic Center Plaza, October 18, 2011.

Former European Union Drug Czar, Dr Carel Edwards, is speaking out against drug prohibition:

“Prohibition is a complete dead-end, it’s dangerous, it’s harmful”

Would have been nice to have a lot more notice on this one. I have invited friends down today and not sure if I can make it. I would SO be there if this article had appeared several days ago.

I think this march is a great idea. I’m sorry that I won’t be able to attend because I am out of town, but I look forward to the next activity.

Thanks OB Rag for notifying all of us!

I did end up at this rally on the lawn in front of the wall, albeit a little late. I didn’t get to hear local mayoral candidate Filner speak, but will most likely vote for him, and it is highly unusual for a U.S. Congressman to appear at a pro medical marijuana rally.

Several speakers from Americans for Safe Access spoke. Channel 7 news was there to record it all and it did appear on the local 6 pm and 11 pm news.

We then marched up Newport Ave to Cable, and then turned left and back to the lawn in front of the wall again, all with a police escort. We were led in chants…”What do we want? SAFE ACCESS! Why do we want it? IT’S THE LAW! When do we want it? NOW.”

The most surprising part of the march was the obscenities and vitriol shouted to us from the bars and some walking down the street. “You’re all f’n idiots,” and things like that. Huh? In OB, I really don’t expect to hear that. But most were supportive.

TV report claimed there were about 90 people there, and maybe there was before I got there. But by the time we marched up Newport, I’d say there was about 50 people. And when I went to my local dispensary last night, I jokingly chided the kids working in there about where they were…why weren’t they at the rally? Most said they were working. Ok, legit answer. But c’mon, not a very good turn out.

No, I’m sorry Frank, I didn’t. I pretty much missed all the speeches.
