Kids, help Santa decorate the OB Tree!
Come down to the foot of Newport (at Abbott Street) about 9:30 Thursday morning and help Santa decorate the giant Christmas tree!
Adults, don’t miss the annual auction to benefit the OB Food and Toy Drive
Bid on awesome prizes from local businesses and sports teams! Auctioneers include Mike James, NY Myke, Ed Decker of San Diego CityBeat, Madison from KPRI, Mouse and others. The auction takes place on December 1, 2011 at 6:30 pm at Sunshine Company (5028 Newport Avenue). The event is open only to adults, 21 and older, and ID will be required to enter.
Shop local and eco-friendly for the holidays – OB Craft Fair!
The OB Craft Fair will take place every Saturday in December, beginning this Saturday the 3rd, at the beach end of Newport Avenue from 9 am to 3 pm. Check out all of the cool arts and crafts and take home some greats gifts for family and friends.
32nd Annual OB Holiday Parade
The first Saturday of December, OB locals and people from all over San Diego look forward to the annual OB Holiday Parade. Kicking off at 5pm OB Time (about 5:05 for those whose clocks run faster), this year’s theme is Surf Paradise. This OB-centric parade is known by folks all over southern California as one of the holiday events not to be missed, where the spectators are as much a part of the show as the participants.
The Ocean Beach Historical Society is promising a Special Guest and a “HOT” historical entry and encouraging Historical Society members to come dressed in historical beachwear from 1920’s to 1960’s. Hmm, is that HOT entry an itsy bitsy teeny weeny bikini? We’ll see… Whether it’s the brightly lit floats, classic cars, dancers in colorful costumes, music or geriatric surfers that catch your eye, this event has something for everyone. Even Santa will be there!
The Ocean Beach Town Council is looking for people who would like to volunteer to help with the parade. Get more info at the OBTC website.
Fun Zone at the Pier
Before and during the OB Holiday Parade on December 3rd come on down to the OB Pier parking lot for music and skateboarding. Entertainment provided byAWOL, Silly Girl, Ori Betty to name a few, and hosted by OB Surf & Skate.
Ocean Beach Merchants Light Up the Season
Every year people gather up their families and drive all over town to see fabulous Christmas light displays. By conducting a holiday decorating contest this year, “Celebrate With Lights”, the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association hopes to put OB on the list of destinations for holiday site-seers.
Initiated by Carol Ladiges of lighthouse Ice Cream, her vision was to have the whole neighborhood lit up to attract more visitors over the holidays. Businesses will compete in sections, with their neighbors, against the other sections throughout OB. Lights are to be set on a timer and be up in time for the Holiday Parade. Winnings sections will be featured in a future issue of the Beacon and photos of their businesses will be posted at the OBMA website. Food and Toy Drive at the Farmers Markets
Bring your food and new toy donations to the OB Farmers Market every Wednesday in December to help local families.

TBO – Santa was one of the first socialists, so why would you say that?
Because he lives in a palatial estate with a horde of workers at his disposal and a seemingly limitless supply of money; He chooses winners and losers based upon their trangressions. He isn’t compelled by the government to evenly distribute his goods. and in fact is not a redistributionist. His unequalled philanthropy may even point to being a capitalist. And don’t rich kids get more presents than poor ones? And it’s not like he takes nothing in return for his gifts. The number of cookies and glasses of milk that he consumes is likely staggering.

I don’t necessarily support the Town Council and their model of “tax the locals” format for getting things done, but going to the auction is a choice of capitalism because you can literally buy gift cards and local services for pennies on the dollar.
It is the best kept secret of the entire holiday hoooplah and I don’t mind sharing that fact because there is plenty to go around.
Last year, at the end, they were giving away fishing trips and personal fitness training and such for like $10. It was nice. I bought several things at a fraction of their face value. And I won stuff in the raffle… It was criminal I tell you.
I know there is still some bad blood for the previous elections debacle between the Council and the Rag, but it is nice to see the “ban” lifted on these events and to see them advertised here. We have plenty of people below the poverty line right here in our neighborhood and all the food and money goes to support them. I can get behind that as opposed to some other “out of the neighborhood” effort.
