San Diego breweries took home 19 medals at the 2011 San Diego International Beer Festival last week at the San Diego County Fair. Here’s a list of local winners, so you know what local microbrews to keep an eye out for.
The contest included licensed microbreweries, small and large, and was based on guidelines published by the Brewers Association. There were 43 divisions/classes and many other sub-classes, plus mead and cider competitions.
Of note, Pizza Port, with breweries in Carlsbad and Ocean Beach, came out with the Best of Show for its Poor Man’s IPA and earned six medals, including three gold. And, Mission Brewery ranked high in the German-style ale contest, second only to Sunner, brewed in Koln, Germany!
And to round things out, San Diego took the field in the English-style brown ale contest.
Judging was conducted in May, but winners were announced at the recent San Diego International Beer Festival.

Big kudos to the Pizza Port, I’m a devout IPA guy and I do love there’s .. on a note about beer, for fun Goggle this… 400 trillion trillion pints of beer lost in space..lol :>) drink up, YEA

Could be a New York thing then, as now that I think about it everyone I know who hates their pizza is from there!
Newport is closer to what we are used to.
One thing I noticed about people from NY, NJ, and Chicago, they have very stringent ideas about what pizza shoul be. I suppose PP doesn’t fit into either catagory. Still, I like it. Newport also. That being said, where is YOUR favorite NY style pizza in San Diego?
That would have to be Bronx Pizza.It is by far the closest thing to NY pizza I’ve found in San Diego.

That’s pretty much everyone’s opinion of the place, as far as I can figure. I largely grew up in an Italian neighborhood in Boston, and while I definitely think the East Coast has better pizza and worse other things, I think the more relevant point to make here about their pizza is that it is not comparable to the other places in our own neighborhood. Espresso, Surf Rider, Newport, and probably a few others have much better pizza. Thumbs up on the beer, though.
There pizza is bland and dry and their beer is great!… but way overpriced!!! No happy hour,they charge 6.50 for a 14oz tulip of Speedway Stout, while Newport Pizza charges $4.00 for a 16oz pint during happy hour and the pizza is better.
NY/NJ people are pizza snobs. I am from NJ and I don’t care to much for the pizza at the port but I can’t say that it is bad. It is what it is. Jersey people do not believe me when I say there is good pizza out here because they have his notion in their head that it is impossible to get good pizza outside of NJ/NY because the water there is magical and makes the pizza special.
My favorite places for NY style is Hoboken in PB and Bronx Pizza in Hillcrest. Trattoria Fantastica in little Italy is exactly like the pizza I had in Sardinia. Newport Pizza is pretty close to NY style.
