The recent windy and wet storm did NOT move the Long Branch Torrey Pine one inch!

Local activists and a Torrey Pine tree specialist have taken measurements of the Long Branch Torrey Pine, before, during and after this huge Pineapple Express storm – which was wet and very windy – and the tree did not move one inch.

We repeat – the Torrey Pine tree on Long Branch Avenue – the one the City wants to cut down because it’s hazardous and “leaning” – did not move during this recent storm.

The storm brought winds to Ocean Beach that bent Palm Trees, that brought down other straight pine trees – but did not affect this Torre Pine.

This is the Torrey Pine that the City wants to remove, partially because of the hearsay from one person that it “moved” during another storm back in November.

A former lawyer and current grassroots activist, I have been editing the Rag since Patty Jones and I launched it in Oct 2007. Way back during the Dinosaurs in 1970, I founded the original Ocean Beach People’s Rag - OB’s famous underground newspaper -, and then later during the early Eighties, published The Whole Damn Pie Shop, a progressive alternative to the Reader.

  1. LOL, Well I guess these other people were wrong. I can see maybe a trim like people do to most trees before winter, but don’t cut the tree down. I saw one of the articles talking about losing power, and I was going to ask if anyone knows anything about this tree. Well here’s the answer.

  2. Public trees are a Community Asset & should be respected, & protected.

Communities that top, otherwise disfigure, or cut down, vs, just work around – public trees – ultimatly end-up looking like the urban gettos that they are.

  3. Hey, is that tree leaning left or right? If it’s leaning left, then I can understand why some people w/ sharp tools would want to cut it down. Now, if it’s leaning right, then the Almighty & Powerfull w/ Cutting Tools would probably note its correctness & leave it be. The tree is probably aligned w/ OB in that it’s leaning left, but others may believe that it’s leaning left of the Whole Freaking Country, and that won’t do because there are more wars to declare, more profits to rake in, more people to bomb. The discussion all comes down to POV. And that would be determined by which side of the tree one is viewing it.
