So we’re having a party.
Circle 10/10/10 on your calendar. That’s the date. The place is wherever you live. And the point is to do something that will help deal with global warming in your city or community.
We’re calling it a Global Work Party, with emphasis on both ‘work’ and ‘party’. In Auckland, New Zealand, they’re having a giant bike fix-up day, to get every bicycle in the city back on the road. In the Maldives, they’re putting up solar panels on the President’s office. In Kampala, Uganda, they’re going to plant thousands of trees, and in Bolivia they’re installing solar stoves for a massive carbon neutral picnic.
Since we’ve already worked hard to call, email, petition, and protest to get politicians to move, and they haven’t moved fast enough, now it’s time to show that we really do have the tools we need to get serious about the climate crisis.
Bill McKibben and the folks at 350.org have been instrumental in getting the White House and president Obama involved in the fight to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by putting solar panels back on the roof of the White House. President Carter installed a set of panels in 1979 only to have them removed by President Reagan a few years later.
“The White House did the right thing, and for the right reasons: they listened to the Americans who asked for solar on their roof, and they listened to the scientists and engineers who told them this is the path to the future,” said Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org. “If it has anything like the effect of the White House garden, it could be a trigger for a wave of solar installations across the country and around the world.”

New Life for an Old Olive Grove

Here are some tasks that need doing: cutting back suckers, removing sumac bushes, gathering olives on the ground, pulling or cutting unwanted growth on the ground, mulching around the trees, fertilizing, and watering.
The owner is offering the use of the land for the development of a community garden. At this point, the sprucing up of the olive trees is a first step to that goal.
After the work is done we’ll have a Celebration Party.

Choose from a variety of projects: Property maintenance tasks for homebound elderly, and local schools, environmental projects in local parks and open spaces, writing letters to the military and preparing items for the homeless. Families with children are welcome! We will also have projects for families to work on, such as painting Peace tiles for the Roots and Shoots Community Peace Garden.

A fun, family ride from the market around the neighborhood. The first 25 people will get a FREE reusable canvas market bag.

A fun ride from Normal Heights to South Park to North Park, with a little activism and celebration thrown in.
We are working to promote bike culture, introduce participants to the SD Bike Commuter program, and mingle at some great businesses after.
We will be partaking in a CRITICAL MASS PROTEST outside a local Valero station @ 1:30p.m. to protest their funding of Prop 23, an upcoming proposition attempting to overturn California’s Global Warming Solutions Act, which has brought thousands of dollars in renewable investments to our state.
We will be ending at Toronado on 30th St. in North Park around 4p.m. to partake in some sweet discount drafts, good conversation, and discussion of the Million Letter March, a campaign to show public support for effective climate legislation.
Good Tunes for Good Jobs and a Clean Environment

From local City Council races to the Governor’s seat, extremist candidates are threatening to slash union jobs, roll back environmental protections and continue the “business as usual” that got us into this economic mess. We must defeat these efforts and get California working again!
Find out how you can help fight the good fight by joining us at IBEW Local 569’s first election season “Battle of the Bands.” We’re teaming up with IATSE Local 122 and local bands for an afternoon of good tunes, good food and a chance to learn how you can take simple, effective actions this fall to support the battle for good jobs and a clean environment. Help defeat Prop 23

Please join us for a Day of Action in San Diego.
We are organizing to defeat Prop 23. Come join us at Pizza Fusion (3827 5th Avenue in Hillcrest) for a quick orientation, snacks and campaign materials. After the orientation we will disburse in small groups to fairs, local establishments and markets to pass out leaflets, talk to voters, and raise awareness about the dangers behind Prop 23.
Prop 23 is the most dangerous proposition on the November ballot because it would overturn California’s Clean energy and global warming solutions act. It must be defeated!

On 10/10/10, the Roots and Shoots Club at High Tech High International will be embarking on a bike ride to Balboa Park in San Diego to raise awareness about reducing emissions. This bike ride will begin at 10:10AM. We will also be armed with seed bombs to plant seeds in places that need a little more nature along the way. At our destination, we will be holding an interactive event for the public to help raise awareness and unify the club as a whole.

bike ride from Point Loma Nazarene University to Cabriollo National Monument (3mi.). This event is in conjuntion with the work party at Cabrillo National Monument to aid removal of foreign species. You can participate in the bike ride or the work project – the best option is to do both! The Cabrillo group work party does have it’s own posting on this site with further info.
This community ride will be for everyone. We will gather at 830am sharp am at Point Loma Nazarene University. We will ride 3 miles of scenic highway to Cabriollo National Monument. Group photo is at 10am for our contribute to 350.org, voicing our care for Gaia! Parking is available at Point Loma, cycling to campus is even better.

Sierra Club Calls Voters to Say No on Prop 23!

Our plan for the election is pretty simple – we are going to get in touch with voters that agree with us on environmental issues, but that don’t vote as often as they should. We are going after the voters that typically sit out these elections and reminding them why it is so important for them to get out and vote on November 2nd.
To do this, we will be calling voters from house parties and phonebanks throughout San Diego county. On 10/10/10, we are calling voters from the Sierra Club San Diego HQ:

Sustainable Energy Fair

The church is having an energy fair on Oct. 10, from 12:30 to 3:00 PM to look at measures by which the church and individuals can reduce carbon footprints. There will be a community light bulb exchange, music, information booths and videos, activities for children, and a “350” art project.
Event Host: First Lutheran Church is a 130 year-old congregation in downtown San Diego. It has been involved with several energy audits with the intent of reducing our carbon footprint, and encouraging members to do likewise. www.firstlutheransd.org provides information about the church, and www.tacosd.org tells about its minsitry of free meals and medical clinics for homeless and low-income families and individuals.

Zero Carbon Gardening/Composting for Peace

This event is organized to aid our local Cabrillo National Park of Point Loma in working towards healing and preserving their ecological environment through invasive species erradication. Expect to do yard work type activity on the grouds of the beautiful park. This event is planed in conjunction with the Point Loma Bike Ride so that you can participate in both events, or pick one or the other, so make sure to get info on the bike ride on its own posting. At 10am on 10/10/10 we will pose for a group picture to forward to 350.org to voice our support for Gaia! We will then spend the day getting to work with the land! Bring you own lunch, work gloves reusable water bottle, hat etc. Some snacks will be provided.
Bringing your own shoval or rake may be helpful in the case of the parks eqiptment running out

The Bishop’s School will be hosting a home football game at La Jolla High which draws hundreds of fans from the San Diego area. This game is analogous to most schools’ “Homecoming” game. A great deal of food and aluminum cans/plastic water bottles are always sold annually and since the stadium does not provide recycling, the aluminum and plastic end up in trash containers. In addition, students in the past were encouraged to decorate the stadium stands with a copious amount of paper and plastic to show their school spirit. This year recycling containers will be scattered throughout the stadium and Green Campus Initiative (GCI) Club will be selling Sigg bottles and giving away free water to fill them to provide people with an alternative to using aluminum and plastic. Also, school spirit will be demonstrated with a limited amount of decorations, where face paint and posters will be replacing the previous decorations.
Event Host: Green Campus Initiative (GCI) is a student-driven club at The Bishop’s School that is committed to greening our Earth and educating students about a variety of environmental concerns/issues.

hey, i’d really like to get reports of what happened yesterday in san diego and around the globe for the 350 campaign. however, i do NOT appreciate pulling up iceplant at the cabrillo light house as a 350 event! c’mon! you can do better than that! (see today’s u-t)
bob – Yes, I also saw that photograph in the U-T – I think it was the only coverage that the U-t gave to the 350 efforts (it was too busy giving coverage to the tea partiers). The picture showed a person tearing out “non-native” iceplant. Iceplant ??? this is what we’re working towards? an ice-plant -free world? jimminy crickets! Of all the good stuff happening, this is the – again – ONLY coverage that your wonderful local paper had on all those events here in our town. I also noticed that this blog didn’t really cover them at all either. What gives?
Mollty – Thanks for your careful observations. Our huge staff was either busy nursing their hang-overs from the Oktoberfest, busy enjoying a rare sunny Sunday, or doing the million other things that paradise has to offer.
Editorduke – Okay, I understand that the beach life is good, at times too good. But couldn’t you have at least assigned one blogger/ reporter to cover the events?
