Dianne Bell and Jim Grant sticky on OB Street Vendors?

Dianne Bell, the Union-Tribune columnist must really like Jim Grant, our local photog. He gets more write-ups than anyone else that we know. Here’s what Bell said in her column today (6/03/10):

The colorfully painted wallets offered by street vendors in Ocean Beach grabbed Jim Grant’s attention. Were they…? Yes, they were made of duct tape. When he asked one of the self-described “urban travelers” what inspired the idea, he expected to hear that the peddlers had been smoking something other than cigarettes. Instead, a vendor replied with a grin, “We all want more money to stick with us.” Apparently the idea, or the $2 “sticker” price, caught on. When Grant returned the next day to buy one, they were sold out.

Sick Eagles Try to Sneak Onto Dog Beach

Early in the morning of June 2nd, Border Patrol agents discovered a small Mexican fishing boat, called a panga, filled with sick eagles trying to sneak onto Dog Beach.   The ill birds were suspected of flaunting US customs and had just motored or sailed through the international border and landed at the first beach that was available. It just happened to be Dog Beach. All 13 “ill eagles” were taken into custody on suspicion of entering the country illegally.

Winstons Benefit for Local OB Bartender Tyson Green June 6th

Tyson Green is a local bartender/OBcean. He is also a diabetic and woke up dizzy from low blood sugar. While preparing his shot, he passed out and broke his leg. He’s out of work for 2 months and disability doesn’t help much when most of your income is in tips. Winstons will be holding a benefit show to help Tyson get by with medical bills. The event is at Winstons June 6th from 3-7pm. Bands, raffles and drinking for a good cause to help out a local.

Arte Fresca Art Show to Feature Local Artists and Live Music on June 11th

Arte Fresca is a new event that features new, local artists and live music. Come join us for our first event on Friday, June 11th @6pm at 5152 Muir Avenue (near the entrance to Dog Beach). Dave Gilbert’s Rhythm Ranchers Play at Tio Leo’s June 4th

Please come out and join Dave Gilbert and his new band the Rhythm Ranchers this Friday night, June 4th at Tio Leo’s on Napa St. in Bay Park. The Rockin’ Aces will open the show at 9:30 and then the RR will take the stage from 10:30 ‘til closing. There’s no cover either! OB Planning Board Project Review Committee Meets June 16th

The Ocean Beach Project Review Committee meets on the Third Wednesday of every month at 6:30 at the Ocean Beach Recreation Center at 4726 Santa Monica Ave. This will be June 16.

OB Town Council meeting June 23rd

The Ocean Beach Town Council next meets on June 23 at 7pm at the Masonic Center located at 1711 Sunset Cliffs Blvd.
