Michael Chen, a Channel 10 News reporter, has a brand, new piece that he is broadcasting tonight about the surveillance cameras in and around the beach. His report has a new slant on the fact that the City of San Diego plans to install up to 16 cameras around Mission Bay and including one on the OB Pier.
Chen came out to OB today (5/5/10) and interviewed Frank Gormlie about the cameras. Gormlie has written about the “creep of Big Brother” and has taken a strong stance against the cameras.
But we cannot divulge the content of Chen’s report until after tonight. His report should be either at 6pm or 7pm this evening on Channel 10.
So, watch this important take on the current state of monitoring beach and bay behavior by police and other law enforcement.
On a side note, when told that a Channel 10 News van had an OB Rag bumpersticker on it, he smiled and said, “I get all my news from the OB Rag.”
Chen, a very affable kind of guy, is originally from Wisconsin, and has been with Ch 10 for seven years. He regularly comes out to beach and has done pieces on the large surf that we saw earlier this year. When he first started working for the station, he was always given a camera person to do the actual filming. But now he does it all. Good luck, Michael, on your news tonight.

Well, my part was short – like a couple of nano seconds, but the over-all gist of Chen’s report is that there’s six surveillance cameras already up along the boardwalk in Mission and Pacific Beach – but they’re not monitored because the police don’t have the money for staff !!!
So WTF!! Yet Homeland Security wants to give money to the City to install 16 new cameras and fund the training of 20 city employees to monitor them.
maybe they can hire some of the 100 san diego teachers that are being laid off this week. or they can utilize some of the librarians that have been dumped.
mr fresh, usually you are more grumpy than this, but i agree – if they install the cameras, they must hire the teachers and librarians first.
Oh, but we’ll support anything the gestapo SS- err, excuse me, Homeland security does to “keep us safe”! (god I detest those words) You know, Frank, you shouldn’t care if they are watching if you aren’t doing anything wrong! (more words I detest)
In the end all this talk about surveillance against some “homegrown terrorist threat” probably does hold water, if only in the way of self fulfilling prophecies. If they contimue with this oppressive march against our civil liberties while themselves engaging in gross corruption, people of conscience will resort to the inevitable…. one man’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter.
