Coalition Bulletin: “This Week at City Hall”
The San Diego Community Coalition publishes this email bulletin to keep our members and the public informed about important Council and Planning Commission Hearings. City Hall is beginning to wind down this week before it goes into a 3-week legislative recess for the holidays. We will resume this bulletin when the city government reopens Monday, January 12.
Monday, December 15: City Council, 10:00 a.m.
Items include: Closed session discussion of “City of San Diego v. 101 Ash, LLC et al,” involving “the City’s claims against its contractors for negligent disruption of asbestos during renovations of the 101 Ash Street property.”
Why it matters: After 10 long years of civic disgrace and hundreds of millions of dollars gone, this albatross is still around the city’s neck. Will it ever end?
Monday, December 15: City Council, 2:00 p.m.
Items include: Fiscal Year 2026 First Quarter Monitoring Report (Added 12/11/25)
Why it matters: Councilmember Vivian Moreno said last Wednesday, “Seeing a net projected shortfall of $23 million is certainly very concerning.” She castigated the mayor for refusing to cut jobs: “The mayor is not the king … I would urge this administration to implement the budget passed by the City Council.”
Tuesday, December 16: City Council, 1:00 p.m.
Items include: College Area and Clairemont Community Plan Updates
Why it matters: These proposed updates have been fought by their communities, most especially the College Area, for forcing too much housing density without the infrastructure to support it. The Land Use & Housing Committee voted 3-1 to approve the College Area update (Campillo voted no) and 4-0 to approve the Clairemont update.
Wednesday, December 17: City Council, 10:00 a.m.
Items include: Approval of the Updated 2025-2026 City of San Diego Legislative Platform
Why it matters: Please read Donna Frye’s OB Rag commentary, “Mission Bay Park Still Is Not Surplus Land – Key Council Vote Could Save Park, Wed., Dec. 17.” Proposed changes to the platform would help stop City Hall from turning parkland over to developers. Let’s speak out in support of those changes.
Thursday, December 18: Planning Commission, 9:00 a.m.
Items include: Appeal of the Staff Decision, 7951 Paseo del Ocaso, La Jolla
Why it matters: The La Jolla Shores Permit Review Committee voted this down 4-1. The Union-Tribune reported that “trustees expressed concern about the closeness of the house to the property line and the appearance of a solid blank wall, conflicting with local building guidelines.” The Planning Department recommends approval.
In-person: Council, 202 C St. Planning Commission, 7650 Mission Center Rd.

Thank you Kate, for this effort. If it wasn’t for an eagle-eyed Rag reader catching the Land Use Committee approval to declare three parcels of Mission Bay Parkland surplus, and the resulting public outrage, we’d be on the short end of that one. Any of us who care about the machinations at 202 C Street should watch these committee and council agendas like hawks. “All that is required for the triumph of evil is for good men (and women) to do nothing.” Keep up the great effort Kate.
