San Diego’s Ocean Beach community is mourning the sudden loss of Chef Dalton Parr, the head chef at The Joint Sushi & Tapas and its sister restaurant The Bowl, who passed away this past Saturday. Parr, just 23 years old, was widely known not only for his talent in the kitchen but for his warmth, humor, and deep connection to the OB hospitality scene.
The Joint announced Parr’s passing in a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, describing him as a “brother, leader, and head chef” whose impact extended far beyond the restaurant. “Dalton Parr was known to so many because of his warm hearted friendliness and super welcoming personality,” the post read. “He was a leader, a teacher, a talented chef, a friend, and mentor in life to others, even those much older than his 23 years.”
The restaurant explained that it had been closed for several days following the loss, citing the shock and devastation felt by staff and ownership alike. “The shock of losing our brother has been beyond devastating in so many ways,” the statement continued, ending with a tribute that echoed across Ocean Beach: “Rest in Power Dalton.”

Whenever someone that young dies you have to wonder how and when, as in his case, the reason is concealed you have to wonder more. Online I finally noticed mention of suicide and a fire.
He passed in his sleep and that is all that is known at this point. It takes up to 6 months for an autopsy. It was neither suicide nor a fire. Please stop spreading untrue rumors/fake news.
