One Person Killed in Hit-and-Run Near Ocean Beach Library — UPDATED — Driver Arrested in Death of Tracy Condon

Here’s the definitive story — by Karen Kucher at the SD Union-Tribune:

A 24-year-old driver was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of fatally striking a woman sitting on a sidewalk in Ocean Beach and then running away, San Diego police said.

The collision occurred shortly before 4:45 p.m. on Santa Monica Avenue near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. Police said the driver, who was parked facing the north curb of Santa Monica, for unknown reasons accelerated forward while attempting to leave and struck a 59-year-old woman sitting on the north sidewalk.

The man got out of the truck and ran off, abandoning his vehicle, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run by officers about three hours later when he returned to the scene where he had left his 2002 Toyota Tundra, police spokesperson Officer Colin Steinbroner said.

The woman was transported to a hospital, where she died. Her name has not been released.

That’s the U-T report as of about 5pm Wed. Nov. 5.

In the meantime, the community has identified the woman as Tracy Condon. There’s a Moment of Remembrance for her on Wed, Nov 12 at 4:55 pm at Veterans Plaza (sunset), Ocean Beach Veteran’s Plaza.

Police are searching for a driver who they say took off after a fatal hit-and-run crash in Ocean Beach.

A man was driving a Toyota Tundra just before 5 p.m. Tuesday [Nov. 4] when he hit a 59-year-old woman at the intersection of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Santa Monica Avenue, according to San Diego police.

The suspect fled the scene, investigators said, and the woman was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

Officials have not yet identified the victim.

Anybody with information about the deadly crash is being asked to contact San Diego police. Tips can also be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers.

OB Rag:

A reputable commenter has stated that the woman’s name is Tracy and was currently homeless, after having served food to homeless people for years earlier.

A member of the OB Community Foundation has stated:

“That was Tracy,…a local unsheltered neighbor. She served the OB homeless food 20 years ago, then became one. May she now rest in peace.” He also said “the community is going to do a ceremony at the wall next week, …”

A person was fatally injured by a hit-and-run incident outside the Ocean Beach Library, Tuesday night, November 4th around 6 p.m.

Police have not released details of the incident in the 4800 block of Santa Monica Avenue.

Specifically, police have not released any information on the vehicle involved or the victim.

  1. SDPD caught the 24 year-old suspect, who has not yet been identified. He came back to the scene 3 hours later and was nabbed, thankfully.

  2. It has been confirmed: the victim’s identity: Tracy Condon and the driver and suspect has been arrested.
