Man Injured After Losing Control of Electric Scooter, Reported to Be in ‘Point Loma Heights’ But Actually in Mission Valley

Red marker to the right is approx. site of accident, clearly not in Point Loma Heights.

On Saturday afternoon, October 4, a 58-year-old man riding an electric scooter was injured when he lost control of the vehicle and was ejected. He sustained an open fracture to his fibula, necessitating immediate transportation to a local hospital for treatment.

Both news stories on this incident reported it occurred in “Point Loma Heights.” But it wasn’t — it occurred in Mission Valley. The accident happened at approximately 3:22 PM along 2100 Hotel Circle South. Both reports mentioned this address.

The headline from 10News: “58-year-old man injured, ejected from electric scooter in Point Loma Heights”.

The headline from Hoodline San Diego: “Man Suffers Serious Leg Injury in E-Scooter Accident in Point Loma Heights, San Diego”.

Most observers can tell right away that the 2100 block of Hotel Circle South is not in Point Loma Heights. And according to Wikipedia:

Point Loma Heights is a neighborhood in Point Loma, a community of San Diego, California. It is bounded by Froude Street on the west, Point Loma Avenue and Chatsworth Boulevard on the south, Nimitz Boulevard on the east and Midway Drive and the San Diego River on the north.

Obviously, both reports got it wrong in location. Why? Did they feed off each other? Why can’t the local mainstream media get the location of a minor injury correct? Was it written by a bot or AI?

Well, so, what else was reported?

In a recent incident reported by the San Diego Police Department, a 58-year-old man suffered a serious injury while operating an e-scooter in Point Loma Heights. According to the SDPD Watch Commander’s Log, the accident occurred yesterday at approximately 3:22 PM along 2100 Hotel Circle South. The individual was thrown from the e-scooter after losing control and sustained an open fracture to his fibula, necessitating immediate transportation to a local hospital for treatment.

Officer J. Perales, listed as the Watch Commander, stated that the man was riding the e-scooter westbound in the center median before the incident occurred. The SDPD Traffic Division is set to handle the ongoing investigation. As of now, it remains unclear what specifically caused the rider to abruptly lose control and subsequently be ejected from the e-scooter, a form of transportation that has grown increasingly common in urban areas.

Authorities have not released the identity of the injured man as the investigation continues. The police are reaching out to the public, seeking any individuals with information related to the accident to come forward. Tips can be safely and confidentially reported to Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477, as urged in the SDPD’s public communication following the event.
