Trinidad Motors and the OB, Point Loma, and Sunset Cliffs Communities

By South OB Girl

Two photos are shown below and show the care and concern the businesses one block from Sunset Cliffs Natural Park have shown for the Ocean Beach and Point Loma communities. The photos show murals painted in this area of OB.  One mural is on the wall of Trinidad Motors and the second mural is on the wall of the Little Lion.

Art Historian training inspires me to analyze the images and stories painted in these murals, but in short, locals have enjoyed these murals and the murals have contributed a pleasant aesthetic to the neighborhood. The mural at Trinidad shows four musicians walking along the beach with instruments, with a bright blue sky and bright blue ocean. The mural at the Little Lion represents part of the family’s history and individuals in the boat represent family members.

Angel Gonzalez, the owner of Trinidad Motors, has worked very hard to build his business. From the first day he moved in, he was cleaning and making repairs to the site with his family and friends and he had the whole building painted with new colors.  His mother and father were there helping in what ways they could, and Angel did the heavy lifting. The building looked (and still looks) very nice with its crisp, fresh gray paint.

Shortly after painting the building and painting the new business name, Angel commissioned  the mural.  Angel has put thought and detail into every aspect of his business.  He has special high tech lock boxes for customer keys and night time lighting providing light for safety (but not too much light which might wake up neighbors).  Even the chairs for customers to sit in and wait were selected with care.  He has kept the property clean and tidy and litter is rarely if ever seen laying around. The full lot is split with Ace Parking and Angel has respected that boundary even when he may have benefited from the use of extra parking spots. He has three mechanics working for him and four lifts, so work is always under way.  Angel and his team are always helpful and they have received excellent reviews.

Angel’s business grew and grew and thrived. He worked very hard to build his business and now, with a new property owner taking over, Angel has been told to leave.

Part of the success of Angel’s business was the location. Empty handed now without a new location arranged yet, it is a sad realization that Angel may never find a location where he can be as successful. This location in the heart of OB and Point Loma helped him to grow so successfully. Adding to these unfortunate events, all the new plans for the property which the new owners have shared thus far will upset the peace and quiet of our community.  A night club. A bistro. A coffee shop, even though we have excellent coffee options in the area already. Many locals are upset and for many reasons.

Another topic to consider: what is the current percentage of total saturation of liquor licenses in 92107?  OB was OVER SATURATED with liquor licenses back when CVS was trying to move in and replace Apple Tree. Years ago!!!  The maximum number of liquor licenses had already been reached back then. 100% at capacity. CVS barely got its liquor license. OB Planning Board members and leaders, OB Town Council members and leaders, and OB residents had a lot of concerns about another place for booze in OB at the time of the CVS liquor license application.  The CVS liquor license was supposed to be the last one in the area and was barely granted. It was sort of “off the record” going to be the last one. Think that whole idea has gone out the window and it appears all the laws about liquor license saturation have changed since then too. But how and why?  What about the schools, the preschools, the day care centers?  OB is a place for families too and the saturation calculations existed for a reason.  Or they used to exist for a reason.

I speak for many others in the community: we do not want our community to turn into PB.  And, we would like to support our existing local businesses.

    1. Hello Susan:
I need to clarify the latest about Trinidad Motors. The Instagram post dated December 15, 2025 announced the closure of Trinidad Motors (after the new owners of 1404 Sunset Cliffs Blvd told Angel to move out by Nov. 1). However, Angel is still working on cars!!! He is just not running a large full scale auto shop like he was at Sunset Cliffs Blvd. and Point Loma Ave. I don’t know the details of where his new spot is, but his process of working on cars will be a little more based on his own schedule and taking jobs from existing customers who are in touch with him. If you get in touch with him on Instagram at @trinidad.motors you may be able to get some more information about how he will be working with customers moving forward. Or, if you have his phone number, go ahead and reach out to him to see how he will be scheduling work for customers. Still keeping our wheels running, just a new set up!

  4. An Instagram post by Trinidad Motors, posted on December 15th, announced their closure after their move from the Sunset Cliffs Blvd. location. Originally many people thought they were relocating to a new location. Seems that for those not in direct contact with Angel Gonzalez, the owner of Trinidad Motors, Instagram is an option to keep informed about if Trinidad reopens somewhere at a later date. Angel and Trinidad Motors can be found on Instagram at: @trinidad.motors.
