On Tuesday, December 17, the San Diego Housing Authority approved the sale of Famosa Canyon, a vacant lot in Point Loma, to build more than 70 affordable housing units.
The housing authority voted 9-0 to approve the sale of this land to Bridge Housing Corporation, clearing the way for three affordable housing buildings, each three stories high. The 9 members of the City Council sit as the Housing Authority — which governs the San Diego Housing Commission.
The lot on the corner of Nimitz and Famosa boulevards has been at the center of a tug of war between the need to preserve open space and the need for affordable housing.
The idea for developing the vacant lot started in 2017 but was solidified in 2019 in a feasibility study by the housing authority. The proposed affordable housing development will be for families earning 30-80% of San Diego’s median income.
The earliest construction can start is in 2027.

I used to ride mini bikes, then motocross bikes in that “canyon” even before Sea Colony & Park Point Loma was developed. Some of the old visible trails that exist, were one’s used by local kids 50+ yrs ago. It was all old military housing in the 40’s / 50’s & abandoned / demolished in the late 60’s. It was a great time to grow up in that neighborhood. I guess it was only a matter of time before it all gets transformed.
