U.S. Rep. Scott Peters, whose 50th District includes Point Loma and Ocean Beach, has just joined a growing number of fellow Democratic members of Congress who are calling for President Joe Biden to end his reelection campaign. Peter’s announcement came right after after Biden’s solo press conference Thursday night, July 11.
Peters, a La Jolla resident, said in a statement that “the nation owes an enormous debt of gratitude to President Biden” and that his shaky debate performance “did not diminish his remarkable accomplishments and record of service,” the debate “raised real concern among elected leaders, supporters and voters that the president will not be able to wage a winning campaign.”
“After a long primary process, we were on track to lose coming into the debate. … This was not a blip,” Peters said. “And while the Biden campaign claims the post-debate national polls remain relatively unchanged, polling in the swing states has worsened alarmingly.”
Therefore, he said, “I ask President Biden to withdraw from the presidential campaign. The stakes are high, and we are on a losing course. My conscience requires me to speak up and put loyalty to the country and to democracy ahead of my great affection for, and loyalty to, the president and those around him.
“We must find a candidate from our deep bench of talent who can defeat Donald Trump. That means fielding a ticket that can win in the swing states where Democrats are not dominant but where this election will be decided. The candidate must be selected through a fair and transparent process.”

Rep. Mike Levin on Friday joined his Democratic colleague Scott Peters in calling for President Biden to end his candidacy for re-election and “pass the torch.”
Levin, who represents the 49th District in north San Diego and south Orange counties, said his decision was not easy. Times of San Diego https://timesofsandiego.com/politics/2024/07/12/second-san-diego-democratic-congress-member-calls-on-biden-to-pass-the-torch/
We can be the Dum o crats w/a circular firing squad , or the Get-er-Done o crats and circle the wagons .” the Giant has a Posse” . Our old wise grandpa can get a nap , their old crazy uncle will still be a raving lunatic.
Well said Ramoaner! Peters talks about “gratitude” which strikes me as demeaning when neglects to say anything about the President’s (continued) accomplishments on behalf of the American people. I have never been sure where Peters’ influences (monetary or other) come from – his climate stands/votes have always been horribly inadequate, while he repeatedly touts his background as an environmental attorney. “We must find a candidate…who can defeat Donald Trump.” 3.5 months from the election!? He has absolutely no credibility with me.
I am deeply disappointed, actually infuriated, by Peters, Levin and other House Democrats who are calling for Joe Biden to step down as candidate. Same for Colleen O’Connor. Did none of them watch his NATO speech, or his campaign speech yesterday in MoTown? He was on fire!
There is NO WAY an alternate Democratic candidate can be brought forward this close to the election and succeed. The only thing these Chicken Littles – including media and pundits – are likely to accomplish is to undercut Biden’s candidacy. Do they really want Trump to win? I find their quick overreaction, based on a single bad night, to be ridiculous and disgusting.
So am I and the entire Dem base. Read Democratic Underground to see what the base is saying as a response. We are boycotting M$M by for their BS reports over the last 2 weeks and we are not supporting any Dem reps who do not support Biden 100%. M$M has alreasy seen declines in ratings so it is working. We are calling the reps’ offices to complain to the DINOs. So far I have 21 Dems in the House and 5 Senate in the Senate. I am calling all of them several times each. Another benefit from all of this nonsense is that it had the opposite effect. Instead of dividing the base they unified us and we are stronger and angrier than ever. HA! M$M will never learn their lesson, no matter how much $$$ the greedy CEOs lose.
We watched the poor performance at the debate and saw and heard with our own eyes and ears. He didn’t just have a “bad night” it was the worst debate performance by any candidate ever. And then Joe tells us in the interview he didn’t even watch it the debate later. His handlers really screwed up. Don’t make it worse by continuing the gaslighting.
It is important to deal with reality. I love Uncle Joe and history will be very kind to him. However, he lost the election with his debate performance (.) He is killing many of the down- ballot candidates, especially those holding office in red states. About 75% of registered voters and the majority of Democrats want another candidate. The other reality is this election is about winning. None of us want to think of Trump AND Biden as being the ones who destroyed our Democratic Republic.
