Dangerous Crack Found in Bluffs at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

Rag reporter Geoff Page is alerting us to a dangerous and large crack at Sunset Cliffs. He was alerted to this extremely dangerous condition at the south end of the pocket beach called Garbage Beach by a person flying a drone who originally spotted it.

This google map photo shows the area south of Ladera Street and Sunset Cliffs Natural Park.

Page visited the beach and confirmed it. He wrote, ” While this one spot is by far the most dangerous, there were a half dozen other spots that were also very dangerous to varying degrees.”

A closer aerial view of the parking lot and area south. Red circle indicates dangerous area.

Page reported:

This one spot is dangerous because water is seeping out at the foot of the break. This could result in an instantaneous, catastrophic failure where anyone on the beach would have no time to flee.

The city needs to alert people to this condition. The best solution would be for the city to induce the final collapse rather than wait until it kills someone. This piece will fall, so giving it a push would not harm anything.

These photos confirm his fears. Water seepage at the cliffs causing erosion has been an issue in this area for many years.

But — -please be forewarned!

Regardless where the water is coming from, this situation needs attention.

  1. This is right now a very dangerous situation! Please notify park rangers, the admin at PL Nazarene and unwary park and Garbage Beach goers.

    1. Man, before there were real stairs, we used to have to traverse the cliff while holding our boards using a few chipped out steps and a short rope that somebody had put up.

  2. I’ve contacted OB lifeguards about this situation and they are meeting with Geoff Page soon to check it out.

    1. Geoff Page will be meeting with a rep from the lifeguards momentarily and we’ll keep our readers up to date.

  3. Geoff Page met with several lifeguards to show the crack. He told me it looked worse from up on the bluff. Sadly, none of the lifeguards were familiar with that entire area. Why don’t they give the new guards a tour of their jurisdiction? Geoff will also be contacting Park & Rec as the park is their jurisdiction.

  4. The lifeguards contacted the city and the city’s geologist will be coming to have a look. I suggested some caution tape down on the beach pinned about five feet high on the broken piece. As I already said, by far, the best solution is a controlled collapse, and soon.

  5. It’s been like that for a couple months now. People just set up right underneath the cliffs and sometimes I do mention the danger and they do move. It does seem like an inevitability that someone will get hurt eventually whether by this specific cliff or otherwise.

    1. Yes, I could tell this had not happened just recently. What amazes me is that no one has said anything about it. The city needs to do periodic inspections of the these bluffs, which obviously needs to be done since no one else brought it to anyone’s attention. I understand the problem well as I spent my career in construction and I know dirt. When this fails, it will be in a matter of seconds.

      1. Well now the city has no excuse because the condition of the cliffs is made public so I guess when/if an injury or death occurs there will be a big fat lawsuit. I thought there was suppose to be a park ranger for this area??
