The premature death of anyone is a tragedy and certainly it is of one within our Peninsula community – and we hereby take note. And we also take note of the location of yet another death of a pedestrian.
Late Sunday night, March 20, a 61-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a car in the 3800 block of Rosecrans Street in the Midway District. About 10:10 pm. She was hit by a 53-year-old male driver in an unspecified vehicle who was traveling southbound on Rosecrans. He stopped after the crash and cooperated with investigators.
Once again a life from our community is taken from that concrete and asphalt jungle known as the Rosecrans. How many have there been in recent years?
The San Diego U-T reported that the woman was seen by a witness “trying to ‘scoot’ across the road.”
“A witness told police the woman was crossing Rosecrans Street near Hancock Street in a sitting position when she was hit ….”
The unidentified fellow human was pronounced dead at the scene. We don’t know why she did what she did — but certainly a life was unnecessarily taken, and it very well could have been taken due to the social inequities of our society, mirrored in the communities that have housed themselves near the Rosecrans.
The police department’s Traffic Division is investigating. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact San Diego police or call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

I am glad to see the tone of this article is very different than past prominent voices here on the Rag. It is most commonly poor infrastructure that should take the blame in these incidents.
Not sure what or who you were referring to in that first sentence, Greg, but poor infrastructure was not to blame here.
Geoff, you and all Rag staff, and most regular readers, know very well what Greg is referring to. If the pedestrian was on a bike there would be every effort to victim-blame her. And grouse about city of SD bicycle “extremists.”

Here, on a post about the tragic death of a women “scooting” across Rosecrans, at least two people, Nathan and Greg, have tried to use the story to continue their tirade against our writer, Geoff Page, because he has the temerity to question some of the statistics about bicyclist deaths and injuries used to promote their agenda. “If the pedestrian was on a bike there would be every effort to victim-blame her.” Talk about blaming!
Nathan and Greg make “every effort” to blame Geoff and the Rag because we are at the forefront of the push-back against the pro-development peddlers.
Mr. J, I did not comment on something you said, I commented on something Greg said. Why you decided you needed to speak for Greg is a mystery, why don’t you let him speak for himself?
Greg, nice of you to skip the social inequities in our society that placed the women, probably disabled and houseless, at that point in time and space.
This was in front of Community Mental Health (CMH) which provides 24/7 emergency mental health services. Once released from custody most of these folks wander the street in the Midway/Rosecrans area. I suspect many of these pedestrian deaths are people who have been treated by CMH at one time or another. We need to fix our mental health treatment system, it’s broke, but I’m not holding my breath. You’d think with a super-majority progressive state government that mental health services would be a top priority instead of pimping a high speed rail to nowhere giving every car owner 400 bucks. I’d be willing to forego my 400 bucks if they’d put it towards in-patient treatment.
Car dependent infrastructure is a problem and inequality of monetary compensation is a major issue as well. Sometimes Americans refuse to change even when it is clear our policies are creating predictably negative trends, because… freedom? This person, scooting upon their bottom, in the dark, in traffic, was a moron and surely deeply traumatized the person who hit her. There was another fatality in front of my house on West Point Loma and Nimitz a few months ago. In the dark morning as the commuters were thickening up a guy on a skateboard turned in front of a car who had the right of way. That driver killed him and also stopped. I have a hard time being empathetic of these arrogant people who flout traffic law out of laziness or apathy. I almost hit an idiot the other day near the burger king where the women in the article was killed. He was crossing at the intersection when it wasn’t his turn and I was trying to make the the light. I honked he flicked me off. Some guy jumped in front of my car by West Point Loma and Midway maybe two weeks ago. I honked. He flicked me off. To a certain and sad extent these people are only going to beat the odds till they don’t. I just hope their time to expire doesn’t happen on my hood.
