Beautiful Sunset Cliffs claimed another victim, Wednesday, September 19. A woman was found dead out on a stretch of rocks off Point Loma Avenue in south Ocean Beach.

About 2:30 pm, a call came in to lifeguards, reporting a woman appeared to be stuck on the rocks. But by time first responders got to her, she had already passed. She was then covered, placed on a stretcher and hoisted up the bluffs using a lifeguard cliff rescue vehicle. A purse was found next to her body.

At this point, she remains unidentified and the cause of her death is yet unknown. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death plus notify her next of kin. And the San Diego Police Department is investigating the incident.

Neighbors told 10News the staircase to the beach at Point Loma Avenue – which dead ends there – is blocked off, and the woman may have been climbing on the bluffs. They also said a woman matching the same description was seen on the bluffs Tuesday.

CBS8 confirmed this with their report from local residents, and added that some said she appeared pregnant,

Firefighters, lifeguards and medics all responded to the scene.

Her tragic death unfortunately follows a trend the OB Rag has been studying that shows five individuals have either died or been seriously injured on average for every year from 2005 to 2017.

I’ve checked the news and the County Medical Examiner’s Office https://www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/me/press/press.html but nothing new.

This is especially sad because it could have been prevented. The City of San Diego was well aware prior to these events that this was a safety issue–I’ve even submitted the crumbling fencing and stairs as a safety concern via the “Get it Done” app but I believe the city blamed it on lack of funding. It’s actually a relatively cheap thing to fix compared to most, I think it was just something they kept putting off. Maybe they’ll think twice now about fixing it now that someone’s life has been taken.

How do you know, pray tell? There’s no report yet at the County Medical Examiner’s office.

Hello there. I submitted a safety hazard/concern about these exact steps on 5/7/2017 10:55 AM (well over a year before this accident) and received this email reply from the city:

“We are currently working to complete the stair repairs. With one carpenter available for Mission Bay and Shoreline Parks repairs often drag out and I apologize for the delays that have occurred there.”

More information in case the friends/family of the individual need it:
