It was just a week ago that we found out the so-called Dog Beach Beer Fest was cancelled. It had been planned for Sunday, April 29.

It had been scheduled from 1 to 5pm and billed as ” a dog-centric event in which human attendees may indulge in unlimited samples of craft beer in our beer garden area” – with “several dog oriented vendors, a dog play area, as well as a DJ.” Called “the first ever Ocean Beach Dog Beach Beer Festival”, it was sponsored by radio station Alt 949, Rockstar Beer, and OB’s very own Hodads.

On the beaches of San Diego, she stands wearing a straw hat secured around her neck and is wearing a black wetsuit. Her blonde hair reflects the San Diego sun and her smile reflects the San Diego attitude. She walks up to a group of women and they grab their surfboards and hit the waves.

To an outsider, they look like a group of friends, having fun with each other as they surf and take in the beautiful weather together. But to Natalie Small, this is her dream made reality and to these women, this is their new found sanctuary.

Each month at the Ocean Beach Town Council meeting, we all rise and pledge our allegiance to the flag – as do countless community meetings and school classrooms across the country.

Because I’m an atheist, I always pause while everyone else it seems says “under god” near the end of the pledge. I always wonder whose god are we talking about. The god of Abraham? The Catholic god? The Protestant god? The Christian god, the Jewish god, the Muslim god? The Buddhist god? The gods of the native peoples who roamed this land before we. I don’t really want to pledge to any god. And I know there’s other atheists out there – especially in Ocean Beach.

Kingdom Hearts III (Xbox One, PS4)

The Kingdom Hearts fanbase is a long-suffering one. While a plethora of spin-offs and remakes have been released continually, Kingdom Hearts II was released back in 2006. After 12 years, the wait will be over as the series finally receives a proper sequel.

For those not in the know, the Kingdom Hearts series is an eccentric crossover between Square Enix and Disney. As such, the action role-playing game has a distinctive Japanese flavor, with Final Fantasy artist Tetsuya Nomura taking the creative helm with the game’s setting and characters. At the same time, characters like Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Donald Duck are adapted to the game’s universe–with their official voice actors performing.

There is one project up for review by the Ocean Beach Planning Board this Wednesday, May 2nd, at 4715 Cape May Avenue – and it’s a possibly a vacation rental in the making.

Other items on the agenda include the establishment of one new subcommittee by the Board – Transportation – and the selection of Board members for the Project Review Committee, and the usual reports by politico reps and executive members. The planning panel meets in the Community Room of the OB Recreation Center, 4726 Santa Monica Avenue – and meetings begin right around 6pm.

May first – or May Day – is really working people’s holiday. So, tell your boss that you’re taking the day off. Yeah, right!

But seriously, this day was established by generations of American workers back in the 19th century as the day for workers and their families. And it spread world wide, way before there was a world wide web, and May Day as a working people’s holiday came to be celebrated in many other countries. But it started here, in the good, ol’ US of A.
