There’s lots to make one upset or angry these days, from Trump and his Russia collusion, to nuclear show-downs, to the national catharsis on sexual harassment, to global warming, all the way to Mayor Faulconer building a $2 million restroom for tourists but none for the homeless …

But one thing that’s making OBceans upset right now is the wholesale turning over of apartments and new condos into vacation rentals. OB is losing needed housing stock and affordable rental units for residents to mini-hotels and weekend party houses for vacationers.

And it’s happening right before our eyes!

Another map of most of OB with STVRs as circles. Prepared by Kevin Hastings.

Take the newly-rehabbed 4 unit apartment building at the corner of Abbott and Brighton. The residents were evicted and now they’ve all been cleaned up and modernized – all the big money.

Or take the 4 brand new 2-story houses at the corner of Voltaire and Abbott. When the project appeared before the OB Planning Board, the owner promised that he and his family would be living in at least one of them. It didn’t happen and now they’re all short term rentals.

Now that the San Diego City Council is meeting on December 12th to nail down policy on these types of businesses, there is a growing awareness particularly at the beach and in coastal communities of the havoc the exploding Airbnb Empire is causing.

To focus this awareness, the OB Rag and the Save San Diego Neighborhoods are holding a protest rally against STVRs in OB on Saturday, November 25th. The event will begin at noon at the corner of Abbott and Voltaire. After a few brief speeches, we’ll walk down to another apartment complex that is being turned into STVRs.

We also encourage OBceans to attend the December 12th Council hearing; it’s at 10 am in Golden Hall.
