It’s Official : America Is in Distress – Place Your Flag Stamp Upside Down

With the Electoral College vote on December 19th confirming Donald Trump as the next president, it is now official that the United States of America is in distress.

We are calling on our readers and supporters to d0 something every day to signify this distress.

And one of these things can be as small as placing your American flag stamps upside down every time you mail something.

The upside down American flag is a time-honored tradition of demonstrating in a small way that the country is in trouble, in distress.

We carry over this tradition to our flag stamps. Please place them upside down on every envelope or package you mail.

This practice of placing stamps that signify our flag upside down was used during the Vietnam War by many conscientious Americans as a way of displaying opposition to the illegal and immoral war.

We can carry on this tradition as we enter this dark period of our history.

A former lawyer and current grassroots activist, I have been editing the Rag since Patty Jones and I launched it in Oct 2007. Way back during the Dinosaurs in 1970, I founded the original Ocean Beach People’s Rag - OB’s famous underground newspaper -, and then later during the early Eighties, published The Whole Damn Pie Shop, a progressive alternative to the Reader.

  1. I have a better idea… I’m going to stop coming to the OB rag to look for actual news in the OB/Point Loma area.

    Sincerely,

Someone who didn’t vote for trump but won’t wallow in his victory

    1. Hopefully when you’re not perusing this page anymore, you can devote some time to reading a dictionary as it seems you don’t understand what the word “wallow” means.

      1. I know what it means…. and the amount of articles on here crying about it suggests that the obrag enjoys crying about it more than reporting on actual news. peace.

    2. Ok then cc, where will you go? The Beacon? Please. What news organ have you ever read where you agreed with everything it printed? If that is your standard, you must be sitting in the dark.

  2. I was always told since I was a kid, that if you put the stamp upside down it means you love them…hhhmmmmm….was someone lying to me? :)

  3. Why don’t you people go out nd protest against the people/states that voted for Trump, he is in there because of them and quit your whining. People like you will be the demise of this country, not him…………….

  4. The Rag has become nothing more that junior high school drama journal.

Please Frank, push through the trauma and get back to covering local issues. You can make a difference in Ocean Beach.

    1. What is a “junior high school drama journal?” I have two kids who went to Correia and I don’t remember anything like that? If you want to be insulting, at least do a better job. And make sure you read Marc’s comment as well.

  5. Why don’t you flag worshippers quit your whining.? People like you are the demise of this country. 1st Amendment of the us constitution provides for and allows for peaceful protest. The question is how long will it take comrade Trump and his cult of deplorables to destroy the constitution as we know it. It appears he has taken the first steps by denying the access of a free press to his incoming administration, not to mention his constitutional violations of taking money from foreign entities as a sitting president. Keep up the good work at the OB Rag Frank. Remember ” United we stand divided we fall.”

Peace my brothers and sisters. God bless the OB Rag.

    1. rufus – sorry you don’t appreciate what we’re trying to do here – work for a balance of local OB / PL news plus city and regional posts – AND – discuss what being in the Trump era means and what we can do about it. The new Trump administration will affect all of us – even in our little seaside village; we need to talk about that.

The OB Rag has never been apolitical – certainly the original one was not apolitical back in the 1970s. The Rag definitely made no bones about its opposition to the Vietnam war, to Nixon, etc.

The online version you are reading is a community platform run by progressives; we’re not trying to be just a progressive platform.

Not to mention, in our fold – which includes the Free Press – are some of the best progressive writers in San Diego.

I don’t want to insult you, rufus, as you’ve been a frequent commenter here, but for someone who is so demanding, we don’t recall you ever sending us a dime. Local news is not free, my friend. So, either you’ll change local news sources (good luck with that) or you’re try to understand what we’re doing, even while not agreeing with our political bent. Lots of Republicans, libertarians and anarchists read us, and despite what we post, like the uber stuff too much to avoid coming back. Hope to see you back too.

      1. That is horrible, if true. More criminalization of the homeless and of homelessness; San Diego has a bad rep on dealing with the issue, and this certainly speaks volumes. Yeah, take their blankets, copper, but don’t shoot.

  6. Oh, ok, let’s just give up then. Changes like this take years. So they are in control now. If the Republicans behave as they have in the past, they will piss in the pool and get thrown out eventually. THEY had a 20 year plan, maybe we need one now.
