The other victims of the vicious attacks on homeless men have now been identified.
In the Midway District of the 4th of July, the killer assaulted his second victim who has been identified as Manuel Mason, 61, who was stabbed and found at Greenwood and Kurtz streets at about 4:50 a.m. The good news is that he is expected to survive, but is still in in critical condition.
An hour or so later near tennis courts at Robb Athletic Field in Ocean Beach, Shawn Longley, 41, was found dead with wounds to the upper torso.
The killer’s very first victim had already been identified as Angelo De Nardo.
The latest victim, found under a burning towel Wednesday morning in downtown San Diego, also suffered severe trauma to his upper torso – but has yet to be publicly identified.
San Diego Police held a news conference on the case Wednesday afternoon. Homicide Capt. David Nisleit announced that “the person of interest” as seen in photographs and videos that have been shared with the public is now a suspect. Nisleit said investigators are certain the man committed all four crimes.
Regarding the latest assault, Nisleit said:
“It appears to be senseless, random attacks on the homeless.”
Police also said that they cannot describe the deadly assailant as a “serial killer” – as there needs to be at least 3 killings attributed to one. San Diego Union-Tribune

The good news: SDPD and Mayor Faulconer spoke today and announced they will do more outreach to homeless community members to advise them of these attacks.
What would make it even better: Let’s ask them to STOP the sweeps that disrupt homeless people’s already disrupted lives, and instead provide increased security and surveillance around encampments. These group sleeping areas have the potential to be much safer for people vs. when they are dispersed and alone, sleeping in areas away from others.
One report on the value of these supervised encampments noted these results:
“Police also keep a close eye on permitted encampments because of the safety concerns expressed by the community, but the worries of the community are often unfounded.83 In one neighborhood, the police conducted walkthroughs every day for the three months of the encampment’s stay.84 The police did not report a single problem during their walkthroughs.85 In fact, almost every call that came from the encampment consisted of encampment organizers notifying police that someone with an outstanding warrant was at the site.86” (see: http://bit.ly/SEAAdvocacy)
It’s past time for a shift from sweeps to supervised encampments for the chronically homeless who are now becoming targets for violence.
& who will pay for that Ms Saldana???
