Screen capture from NBC7 video showing officials with corpse of unidentified man found off Sunset Cliffs.

A man’s body was found in the water off Osprey Street in the Sunset Cliffs area of Point Loma late Sunday morning, Feb. 6th.

A photographer in a private helicopter first spotted the body about a half mile to 3/4’s of a mile off Osprey around 11:30 a.m.  Police were notified and they sent their own helicopter, which at first, it appears, could not see the body.

Lifeguards back on shore using high-powered binoculars l0cated the body, and a lifeguard boat was sent out to retrieve it. They pulled in the nude remains of a man in his 30’s, badly decomposed, and took the corpse to Quivira Basin.

Officials estimated that the body had been in the water at least a week, possibly more. According to lifeguards, there was no sign of trauma or obvious cause of death found on the body.  And no known missing person report has been filed.

It’s now the job of the Medical examiners to determine the cause of death and identification. were en route to the lifeguard dock at Quivira Basin to take the remains in for investigation.
