Visual Review of Proposed Bike Corral in OB

OB Bike Corral ja 01The Ocean Beach Planning Board voted unanimously recently to support the installation of a bicycle  corral in OB. The main idea is to install one along Bacon Street, the “bicycle boulevard”. And Pizza Port has stepped forward to offer their business as a site as OB’s first bike corral. Pizza Port is interested in being the first site of a bike corral but has not signed up for this yet, and are in discussions with planners about its feasibility. Their location is an ideal spot but it is not guaranteed.

The bike corral takes a street parking space, so Pizza Port – or another like business in a similar situation – would have to give up a space in front of their corner business at Santa Monica and Bacon, if a deal is made with them.

Having one or more bike corrals is a way to raise bicycle safety awareness, especially after the recent accident that occurred to one of Pizza Port’s employees. The hope is that if one is installed, the momentum for more would evolve.

Bike corrals are not costly, it was stated at the planning meeting, and are being championed around the city.

Here is a visual review of the proposed bike corral, originally presented at the OB Planning Board meeting by vice-president John Ambert:

  1. Glad to see this! Tough to find places to lock up your bike around OB sometimes. Any references made to color in the meeting?

  2. I was told there would be one going in at the corner of Spray and Brighton as well. Not sure how to verify that. I know they did a cut of some grass at the park there on the corner and laid some concrete in its place which I assume is where it will be installed.
