Common Kindness Is Not Dead – and How ‘I Blew It!’

dog niceHave you ever wished that you had done something but by the time it happened it was too late to act upon it? That happened to me yesterday. Let me tell you the story.

I had a massage at my favorite massage therapist’s office. Usually I pay in cash but I was short today so I wrote her a check. Had a wonderful rub-down at “Mary’s Therapies” in Ocean Beach, and left about noon.

About 2:00pm, Mary called to tell me that she thought she had lost my check. She couldn’t find it anywhere and wanted me to know. I talked about stopping payment on it but she told me she had already endorsed it and added her account number on it so I figured that no one else could cash it. I thought I’d wait a few days and see what happens.

Two hours later there was a knock on my door. A nice young man, a student of about 23-24 was standing at the door. When I asked him how I could help him, he said,

“I think I have something of yours.”

And wouldn’t you know it – the young man – Tom – had found my check over by the pier – Mary’s is on Narragansett, and he brought it to my house. I talked to him for a few moments and had a fleeting thought that I should take his picture and write it up, but I was in the process of feeding my new dog Shadow, and he was barking, so I let it go.

Darn! I wish I just taken a moment to talk more to Tom. How many others do you know that would have done what he did?  Common kindness is not dead.

I wish I had taken his picture. He is living in Ocean Beach for the summer so I hope he sees this article – or someone tells him about it – because his ethics are wonderful and should be emulated by others.

Tom – thank you. I hope you enjoy the Kiwi Jam I gave you – (maybe if he brings back the jar I can find out more about him.)

I am just so impressed with his actions I want to share it with you.

I like that the picture features the logo of the American Humanist Association.

I hope that Tom reads this! What a thoughtful guy – to find the check by the Pier and take the time to come and give it to you, reassuring you and Mary both by that action, well, his parents should be proud since they raised such a good young man! So Tom, if you’re reading this – you done good and I hope that good things happen to you!

If any one reads this and knows Tom, please let him know I’d love do a follow-up on this story. BTW – he goes to college in Minnesota. Family lives in SD and he is here for the summer.
