“Country Waffles” was a restaurant that my husband and I used to frequent often. I had not been back since he passed away, almost 4 years ago, so when Marilyn told me she would go grocery shopping with me and help me push the shopping cart – as I have a broken shoulder, I suggested breakfast also. I knew that she liked the “Country Waffles” and I figured I could go back there without any “pangs” as I frequently do when I go to a favorite place alone for the first time. It was interesting to see that nothing had changed; even the wait staff was the same.
They have a very extensive menu, which includes breakfast and lunch. They are not open for dinner. Besides the waffle selection, they have a skillet/scrambles section; a country breakfast; omelets; pancakes and crepes; Benedicts; hamburgers and sandwiches, etc. The prices range from $6.99 for their specials to $9.25 for a “Butcher Block Burger.”
Although it was noon, Marilyn and I opted for breakfast. I ordered the strawberry crepes, but asked for the strawberry compote on the side; Marilyn had a special breakfast – a “One, Two, Three” which consisted of one egg, 2 slices of bacon or sausage, and 3 pancakes. She ordered bacon instead of sausage.
Imagine her surprise when she was served sausage instead of bacon. She told the waitress, even before the plate was put down in front of her, that she ordered bacon. The waitress immediately took the plate away and several minutes later brought her some of the greasiest bacon I have ever seen. Although I did not say anything to her, Marilyn took her napkin and blotted off the grease.
She also ordered her egg done well, but when she looked at it she found there was a gooey egg white all over her plate. She told the waitress she could not eat the egg and the waitress said she would get her another egg. She began to lift the plate but Marilyn suggested that she just bring her a freshly cooked egg. Which is what the waitress did.
My crepe was okay – I do not like thick pancakes, and as long as they can roll the crepe up I am usually happy with it. The compote was also average; strawberries in a sweet base with whipping cream over it.
Marilyn had decaf coffee; I had raspberry ice tea.
Marilyn and I were talking when the waitress refilled her coffee, and she overheard Marilyn say that she would pay for our meal. I argued; said we would each pay our own way. When the waitress brought the bill she gave it to Marilyn. She had obviously heard our conversation. The total bill, without tip, was $20.47.
Would we go back? I do not think I will, just because I make a better crepe than the restaurant. If Marilyn were to go back she probably would not order the same thing she had today. Greasy bacon and runny eggs is not very appetizing. One more restaurant that is on a “downhill slope.”

I’m confused, should she have worn earplugs over to your table?
She should have put the bill in the middle of the table and allowed Marilyn and I to decide who would pay the bill.
That is very unfortunate they had a not so good experience. Country waffle is one of my most favorite restaurants for breakfast. Before i moved to Phoenix, I went every Sunday morning for almost a year straight. And now every time I visit home, I always make sure I have a breakfast there. Still to this day I love it there. I was last there About a month ago, the wait staff still know me by name; and had an amazing breakfast as always. Hopefully it was just a one off issue, unfortunate it was on a day these two lady’s come back after many years.
Marilyn will go back. I probably will not. Just wasn’t as good as it used to be.
