Who could have imagined that my review of “Chili’s” would cause indigestion from some of our readers. My, my! So I decided to take myself and a female friend back out into the streets of Ocean Beach for redemption. My friend, a visitor from Ohio, had read my earlier review of “Raglan” and wanted to try it. I had been back three times since my review of Raglan, so decided a “rereview” was necessary to calm people’s gerd and anxieties.

It must be pointed out that each time I have returned to “Raglan” I was pleased with the service; pleased with the quality of food, and pleased by the friendliness of the wait staff. But today I approached my dining experience a little differently.

Since I was reamed by a reader for writing a review of a large corporate restaurant, I wanted to make sure that Mike, the owner of this restaurant, was not a mogul. He said he wasn’t. Then, because it is located in Ocean Beach, I wanted to make sure that he was not a member of the “tea party” nor supportive of any tea party candidate. He is not. I wanted to make sure that he was not a “right wing” nut; after all, as the reader pointed out to me, the OBRag is a “leftist organization” and heavens, I would not want to alienate any potential eater by suggesting that any monies earned would go to support a Republican candidate. Fortunately, Mike passed the litmus test without any red flags popping up and biting me.

As for the review: Are you aware of the great luncheon special that is offered? Direct from the regular menu is your choice of a “Bare Burger” which normally costs $9; or a “Queenstown Fave” – regularly priced at $9.90; or an “Average Joe”, also $9.90; “Lil Bitties” – same price at $9.90; or a “Grilled Bird” at $9.90. Also offered on the lunch menu are two salads, “Feeling Randy” at $10, regularly, and the “Newport Wedge”, also regularly priced at $10. What makes the luncheon menu such a bargain is that it comes with French Fries AND a glass of beer, and all for the price of $10.99. That is a huge savings from the regular menu, because the French fries are extra, and, of course, so is the beer.

And once again, neither my friend nor I were disappointed. The hamburgers were juicy; cooked to perfection; served piping hot, and too much to finish at one sitting. The shoestring potatoes were tasty, and the sweet potato fries were succulent. Neither of us wanted beer but we substituted lemonade for our drink. It was neither to sweet nor too tart, and our glasses were refilled before they were empty.

I now feel that my redemption is complete. I went back to Ocean Beach; I went to a single proprietor; his money will not go to support a right wing candidate; and, more importantly, the food was excellent. And…if any of your friends stay at the OB Hotel when they come to visit you, tell them to ask for the “OB Hotel Special” coupon. Draft beer is only $1 with the purchase of any burger, and there is a 15% discount on the check.

I can hardly wait to read all of the accolades that must be coming my way after this “rereview.”

Judi- and you should have added “no trees were killed to promulgate this review!”

Thanks, Anna. And the menu’s were on recycled paper and used over and over and over again!

Keep doing things the way you’re doing them Judi. I don’t always agree with your reviews (most of the time I do) but I went back and added a few more comments of my own (in support of course;)) to your Chili’s review. It really seems like people just sometimes look for things to complain about.

Thanks. Sometimes a chef has an off day; sometimes even I have an off day, but I can’t help but be amused at some of the comments I receive on the reviews. I never knew that I shouldn’t eat at a Republican establishment. That certainly narrows the field, doesn’t it!

I’ve had a few good experiences myself at the rebranded-for-OB Bareback Grill, and those obnoxious people that stuff coupons in your screen door have actually left me a few 2-for-1 burger coupons, which I’ve hung onto.

One question – is there a reason in the article you refer to Raglan as “Ragland” in the article? Maybe I’m missing an ‘in’ joke or something, because it’s spelled normally in the link to your old article, as well as in all instances there…

My error, Dave. I have just had my second cataract surgery and letters are a little fuzzy. You are right. It is RAGLAN. Thanks for catching the error.

Congrats Judi! I’m glad things went well.

And I changed the name. Sorry we didn’t catch, thanks Dave for helping with the editor duties!
