ComicCon, like the Burning Man festival or a Nico’s beans-cheese-y-papas burrito, must be experienced to be fully appreciated. But at The OB Rag, we believe that vicarious enjoyment is important, too. So here are some pics from Thursday, the first day of a full weekend of ComicCon fun.

You know you're in for a good time when a guy outside is nonchalantly remote-controlling R2D2

My buddy Alan on the ComicCon floor

me with My Little Pony, an important toy from my childhood

if you like comic books, ComicCon has you covered

endless amounts of action figures on display

lots of video-game displays, too

a Batman made of Lego bricks

Special Edition Transformers 3D glasses by Oakley - because real fans bring their own pair to the theater

this GI Joe toy battle scene struck me as "too busy," but A for effort

Alan chillaxes emperor style

me and Alan in the Nickelodeon booth

you meet some interesting folks at the 'Con

indeed, the people-watching is top-tier

the scene even spills on to Gaslamp streets

you've got to watch out for the weirdos

but when day 1 ends, it will leave you wanting more...
OB Rag coverage of ComicCon continues through this weekend.

Shane, thanks for this , but …. ah, where’s your costume, dude?
The story behind the story here is… did Shane use the OB Rag to get media credentials (and free passes) to Comic-Con for him and a friend?
If so, very well done… lol.
Is that a media pass around his neck? And where’s Kirsten?
Frank, Alan and I (and possibly Kirsten) will be attending in costume on Saturday. stay tuned for pics of that…
Seth, it’s actually the other way around… my friend Alan got the free passes and hooked up me and The OB Rag! Shout-out to Alan for the help, of course.
I think it was so awesome comic-con was started in OB.
Does anyone know where alert books was?
Pat, that article you link to is a must-read for anyone interested in ComicCon.
Thank you for pointing out the OB link – I had no idea before, but I agree that the history is definitely sweet.
I wonder if there are any “Woodchucks” who still live in the OB area or not too far away?
Shane, thanks for sharing your experience at Comic Con. I’ve never been. Went to go years ago, but decided we didn’t want to deal with the crowd. Going to check directory at OB Historical Society archives to find out where Alert books was. I knew Shel Dorf, wishing now I would have interviewed him. Hope to see you in the water soon.
