Back in 1913, the Wonderland Amusement Park in Ocean Beach was a place where San Diegans went to ride on the roller coaster, whoosh down the water slide, and do the daring new fox trot in the dance pavilion.

When three prominent members of the arts community were planning an international dance festival, they wanted to give it a name that conveyed San Diego’s flavor. One of them, Patrick Stewart of Sushi, knew about Wonderland because he’d lived near what used to be the water entrance to the park, now Dog Beach and Robb Field.

Thus, “Wonderland: A Festival of International Contemporary Dance” was born. Sushi, UCSD ArtPower! and UCSD’s Department of Theatre and Dance are presenting the event, which debuts next weekend with 10 performances by four dance companies — Monica Bill Barnes and Kate Weare from New York, Lux Boreal from Tijuana and Australia’s Chunky Move.

Kudo’s to Patrick Stewart et. al for bringing Wonderland back to the native consciousness. I had the good fortune of being Patricks neighbor when he and the authoress T. Greenwood, (check out her titles at the OB Library or at ( lived on Lotus, partied hardy, met their parents, went to their wedding and watched the fireworks w/them & their daughters . A better group of folks you could never find. I miss the Pat & Tammy and they will always have a home in my OB City of Dreams.

Does anyone know if the mini-carnival that set up on the wooden parking lot at the foot of Newport in the 50’s was the evolution(if you believe in that stuff) of Wonderland?
