We do not have all the details yet, but yesterday, March 15th, the City Council of San Diego approved funding for the Small Dog Park at Dusty Rhodes. It includes money for a fence to separate the Small Dog section from the larger area where big dogs roam. Now it just needs to be installed.
Councilmember Kevin Faulconer introduced the measure and said this:
That is the Dusty Rhodes Dog Park. I want to thank the members of the community that have been extremely active on this issue for the last several years. It’s really one of those items that has strong neighborhood support.
In essence, you can imagine the popularity of any off-leash dog park, this will help separate the larger dogs from the smaller dogs. It’s a very popular dog park that’s existed for a long time. There are people involved in that out in point Loma and Dusty Rhodes Park, I want to thank them for the help in the last year and a half. Move the item.
The measure was seconded, the vote taken, and it passed unanimously.
Over the years, there have been several fatal or injurious encounters between large and smaller dogs. One such encounter occurred on November 28, 2010 – go here for the details. Activists have alleged that five small dogs have been killed at the Park due to the aggressiveness of larger dogs.

This is from Monica Honore, who is the Area Director for the Park & Rec Dept. She promises to have more information at our meeting on 3/24/11 of the Dusty Rhodes Park Committee.
City Council unanimously passed the item in Tuesday’s (3-15) meeting. The Right of Entry Permit is being processed and the work will be scheduled by the company. All parties know that this is a long-awaited item and that the community is anxious to have the work completed. I don’t have a timeframe for you right now, but I will definitely have more information for you at the meeting next week. The dog park will probably be closed during the installation of the fence and we will give as much notice as possible and post signs as we did for the expansion.
I am so happy to hear that finally they are doing this. I don’t know how many letters I wrote and others for this park to be completed. It has been almost a year since I lost my little Zeus, and this makes it so much easier that something has been done and that others won’t feel the pain I have felt, hopefully. Everyone needs a safe area to let their dogs play. This is just so wonderful. I can’t wait to hear more details and see the park being built. What a big win for dog owners alike.
