When he talks about San Diego as the perfect scene for his TV crimes, actor Donal Logue likes to toss out a W. Somerset Maugham quote about the French Riviera. The geography is off, but the sentiment is a straight shot to the dark heart of our golden city.

“(Maugham) said that Monaco was a sunny place for shady people, and that’s what we’re dealing with here,” said Logue, who was in town with co-star Michael Raymond-James to talk up “Terriers,” an FX network detective drama set in Ocean Beach and filmed all over San Diego. “It’s powerful when you do a show like ours in a place like this.”

In “Terriers,” Logue and Raymond-James play private investigators dealing with the grimy underbelly lurking beneath our tourist-town tan. The series is still in its first season (it airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FX), but its story of off-the-grid detectives with San Diego sand in their (gum) shoes has a blood trail that goes back a ways. We may look like a sunny-side-up kind of place, but our pop-culture profile can be pretty hard-boiled.
