obflashes[1]pinkgreen“Terriers” Filming at Hodad’s All Day Tuesday May 4th

Mike Hardin, co-owner of OB’s most famous restaurant Hodad’s, told me that his place is closed all day Tuesday, May 4th, as the TV series “Terriers” being filmed in Ocean Beach is using his place for a shoot.

“Oh, man, it’s awesome,” Mike told me.  “They using Hodad’s name, my cooks, and it’s going to be an authentic version of Hodad’s.”  The filming outfit is using their own waiters and waitresses who will be wearing Hodad’s T-shirts. The restaurant will return to “normal” on Wednesday, the 5th.

Hardin is still planning on opening a second Hodad’s in downtown San Diego.  “We’re in the permitting process now,” he said.  He hopes to open numero two at the corner of 10th and Broadway.  “All roads lead to Rome,” he said, “but all buses lead to Hodad’s.”

Rally for “No More Cuts In Education” on Saturday, May 8th

Plan on attending this rally to stop the bleeding from our schools.  Join parents and community advocates on Saturday, May 8 at 10:00am, at Balboa Park, 6th & Laurel.  To see more details and RSVP, follow go to this link

This is a rally featuring students, parents and educators to show our support for a strong school system. Stop the state budget cuts, restore funding for education. We need to make our voices heard in Sacramento the week before the budget for next year gets negotiated (behind closed doors).

Heathens’ Fundraiser Set for May 15th

The Ocean Beach Heathens – a silly group formed just for fun that holds a midnight procession every Spring – is holding a fundraiser on May 15th at 9pm.  This year is their 9th year, and a party is planned for later in the summer in OB.  If you are interested, you need to go the following website zirkubu.com for more info or email them at zirkubu@gmail.com – It’s $15 to get in.

Don Truesdail CD-Release Party a Success

Don’s CD release at Portugalia on April 29th was an historical happening. His CD, “Dasvidanya Bingoland…Hello Nancy!”, was released posthumously as he was killed a year ago in a traffic accident.  Friends and community members came together in peace and love to honor the music and memory of a great man. Talented and experienced musicians performed with all their heart and soul late into the evening. Students from Mar Vista where Don taught also came out to support his  CD. For more information please visit “About Don” at truesdailstudio.com

Voice of San Diego Holding School Board Candidate Forum – May 20th

Too often the school board race is a sleepy one, something that people forget about. It shouldn’t be.  voiceofsandiego.org is giving you the perfect chance to meet the candidates, find out what they think and ask them the questions you care about.

The Voice is bringing the incumbents and the challengers together in a live forum to ask them the best questions that their readers can think up. You’ll get to hear their thoughts, question them on tough issues and mingle with them afterwards.

It will be held on Thursday, May 20th, 7pm-9pm, and will be at Liberty Station, Corner of Dewey Rd. & Historic Decatur Rd., Bldg 202, Suite 205.  Moderated by VOSD’s Emily Alpert, the event and parking are free. Although advance registration is not required, if you do plan to attend, sending a quick email to summer@voiceofsandiego.org will help ensure they have plenty of chairs.

Jon, thanks for your diligence on the beer issue. No cuts in line. Will you be bringing your beach chair? Now, what about the new Newport Pizza opening up on Newport (of all places)?

New Newport Pizza?? Do tell. I will always continue to support Hippie Pizza since they have such a wide variety of beers on tap and in bottle. I’m just excited to have more options.

On the 25th it says they’re offering $3 pints of “OB Chronic” – gonna have to try that one…

Thanks for the heads up! I e-mailed them a couple weeks ago and asked, and got not much more than “we hope soon!” in response.

Looks like not everything is going as planned. Drove by there this morning and the fence was still up. Called the number for the store and it just rings off the hook. Looks like no Port Brew for me tonight. :(

Yeah, I failed to get anyone on the phone as well. A coworker got ahold of someone at the Carlsbad location who informed him that they were not going to open today, and they expected the opening to be in a matter of “days, not weeks”.

Cops were real pricks to my kid at the filming today…one rent-a-cop lady said we could walk over to the crystal shop where we were gonna get a Mama’s Day present after school, then we got accosted by a SDPD ten steps later who got all offended we might get in the way of the crew’s shot half a block up and across the street from Hodad’s. Some lady with the crew yelled at us that we were talking too loud when I was trying to ask the officer why the security guard said we could walk, he got all pissy and sent us away, kid in tears. Sucked.

I was just interviewed by Michael Chen from Ch 10NEWS about surveillance cameras. It will air, he said, either at 6 or 7pm tonight. He’s got a real interesting tilt on the issue. So, watch it. (And thanks Sarah for the coffee.)

Nooo. I didn’t want to display such a naked show of pride, wanted to be more humble.

The entire pier parking lot will be closed to the public Thursday it looks like for “Terriers” filming. And a good part of Abbott as well.

Reply

lane tobias May 5, 2010 at 1:12 pm

thats bs. ya know, there are people who live in OB and it will probably be a nuisance to us.

Reply

Frank Gormlie May 5, 2010 at 2:43 pm

It’s all part of the sacrifice when film crews take advantage of paradise. I hope the City got some good bucks for these sacrifices.

Reply

JPinSD May 5, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Does the city or OB post anything about these closures?

Reply

Frank Gormlie May 5, 2010 at 3:01 pm

The parking lot had lots of little signs that said ‘No parking’ – special event – for Thursday May 6th.

Editordude May 6, 2010 at 11:23 am

Dear Readers: If anyone would like to describe any of their experiences with the filming, here’s your chance.

Reply

Sarah May 6, 2010 at 6:55 pm

All I have to say about the filming is that it’s a boatload of money being spent on what is sure to be nothing more than the usual inane drivel to be spoon-fed to the mindless masses via television.

I suggest that when folks want to use our community to film crappy TV shows they must donate the funds to keep the local library open for one day for each day they clog the streets with their equipment.

ooops… is my attitude showing?

psd May 6, 2010 at 10:30 pm

With luck, it’ll turn out OB is where prime-time soaps go to die…if this show goes the way of the Ex List, I betcha we’ll get a few years off.

Mayor Sanders announced on These Days on KPBS this morning (May 10) that a plan to save the fire pits will be unveiled today. It will continue to involve anonymous donors.
