OB Rag Transcends Itself

OB Rag 9-14-09

Have you noticed our new “look”?  If you scroll down far enough, it appears that we have four columns, two of which are side-bars.  So, two side-bars.  This is new – this is big. This will allow us to take on ads.  We need ads to sustain this community webpage.

Patty at work 001
Patty pulls the switch, hits the icon, pushes the button - stop the presses! The blog has changed

After many hours of testing and prep, Saturday night, September 12th, Patty Jones clicked the icon with her mouse – and “poof” the new changes were established – our blog transcended its former self, with upgraded software and a more robust platform. We have not ironed out all the bugs yet – so if you see something that appears out of whack, let us know in a comment to this post.

Also our new format allows us to have two feature articles.  Plus we have a new, enlarged nav bar (navigation bar – the gray bar just below our masthead OB Rag).

So, on our nav bar, click on “Ocean Beach” and you’ll see all the most recent posts on or about OB.   Same with “San Diego”.  The “Popular” button takes you to articles that attracted a lot of interest and comments.

Check out the “History” button. It takes you to a page that begins the history of the first OB Rag – the underground newspaper that flourished during the first half of the 1970s and our namesake.  It also includes accounts of many historic community events – such as the great Jetty Fight of Summer of 1970.

Stick with us as we kink out the works!

A former lawyer and current grassroots activist, I have been editing the Rag since Patty Jones and I launched it in Oct 2007. Way back during the Dinosaurs in 1970, I founded the original Ocean Beach People’s Rag - OB’s famous underground newspaper -, and then later during the early Eighties, published The Whole Damn Pie Shop, a progressive alternative to the Reader.

  1. The new layout is very attractive. The organization is more intuitive than before too. And as usual, the writing contributions are excellent. Muchly appreciated!

  2. I really like it!! Way more style . . . and yes, more intuitive. Thanks Patty. . . . and good luck with the ads!!
One suggestion, at least for old eyes like mine, the color on the smaller all caps (like the byline) is a little faint . . . could it be shaded up a bit?

  3. I like the new look and I will tolerate the ads…only IF you bring back the beige (original) background…. It made the whole look stand out from all the rest.
(how about a background color poll)

    0 I vote beige

    1. clubstyle – you only get to be in on heavy weight decisions like that if you’re on staff. Which is always an option fer ya.

    1. It was just another lame attempt at a joke. I’ve been calling everyone liars a la Joe Wilsons, “YOU LIE!” outburst. Sometimes I wish I had a breathalizer for my computer.

      1. Ahhhh…well here’s a rather tardy… LOL
I should for your act on stage at winstons comedy night?

Oh and Shawn… It’s more like a futon actually. Change the water in the bong bro.

  4. Me is going to get confusered…with the new fishwrap-style comments where you can comment on a comment I can’t just scroll to the bottom of a thread for the latest, I’ve got to scroll through all comments if I want to follow a discussion on a post and check dates and posting times. But if it works better for everyone else and I’m just some sort of ignoramus, let’s roll with it…especially since I don’t know if I actually count as ‘staff’ or not or Frank, Patty, and the gang just make me feel special by giving my occasional temper tantrums their own author designation. Regardless of how it goes, the Rag rocks…will ya shoot me an e-mail on vertical banner advertising rates? If they’re in the same value range as Shawn’s commentary I might be able to sling a couple…
