Tampering with Freedom of Speech Is a No-No

by Ernie McCray

We as a country
should keep alive
the brief firing of Jimmy Kimmel,
remembering it for what it was:
a vicious attack
on his Freedom of Speech,
the most precious right
of citizens of a free society,
taken from him
on the whim
of a president
who lives in fear
of any negative words that are spoken about him
or spoken about anyone or anything
that represents him.
Those who dare to do so are categorized,
in his autocratic overly demonic mind,
as his enemy,
foes to go after
like a predator
hunts its prey.

All to say that what happened to Jimmy Kimmel,
the reckless tampering
with his right to speak as he wishes,
should never again happen
to anyone in our country
as it signals to us
loudly and clearly
that we citizens
need to, more than ever,
in any way feasible,
apply a chokehold
on this dictatorial behavior
that’s wildly out of control,
and make this nation
live up to what it claims to be:
“The Land of the Free.”

We, simply must
restore our democracy,
one in which
Freedom of Speech
is held dearly
as a precious core American ideal.

I was raised in a loving and alive home, in a black neighborhood filled with colorful characters in Tucson, Arizona. Such an environment gave me a hint that life has to be grabbed by the tail as tight as a pimple on a mosquito's butt. With no BS and a whole lot of love. So, from those days to now I get up every morning set on making the world a better place. On my good foot*, and I hope my writing reflects that. *an old black expression
