It has been some time since I have gone to a new restaurant with the purpose of critiquing it, but several people have contacted me about this restaurant with so many nice things to say about it I decided to give it a try. I called Steve and asked him if he would like to join me and he said “yes”.   And I am so glad that we did.

The restaurant is owned by a family that lives in San Diego.  I spoke to both the son and daughter and found out that he went to La Jolla High School and that his father is the chef.  The menu is very extensive and I thought they might be related to another Italian family that has restaurants in San Diego but they are not. In short, the food is excellent in this place.

First of all I want to clarify where it is located because I had some “difficulty” in locating it.  It is behind Grocery Outlet on West Point Loma.  I was told it was near CVS but it is not so don’t give up.  It is to the “el” of the parking lot.  There is one restaurant directly behind Grocery Outlet and this restaurant is next door to that.  There are many tables set outside, with one of the cutest bottle holders on the tables there.  There is parking in front of the restaurant and along the side of the parking lot.

So….let’s get to the menu! The first items are Antipasti and there are 13 listed.  There is a wide range and prices range from $16.95 to $20.95.  There is a large “Insalata” section, consisting of six different kinds of salads.  There are 15 kinds of Pastas, including Ravioli, Tortellini, Gnocchi, Spaghetti, Linguine, etc.  They range in price from $20-$26.95.  There is also the option of choosing from their “Secondi” menu, which consists of New York Steak ($30) to Lasagna, to Risotto, to Mahi Mahi, etc.  There is a wider price range in this area.

And they aren’t done yet! There is the option of choosing the kind of Pasta you want and the Sauce you want on it.  For example, I ordered the Fettuccine pasta with a Primavera sauce ($21.95) which consisted of Garlic, carrots, mushrooms, spinach, broccoli, zucchini and cherry tomatoes.  I have never tasted carrots as good as these were. I don’t know what they did to them but they, along with all the veggies, were not overcooked and delicious.  And there was so much!  I shared some with Steve and I still brought home enough for dinner tonight!

Steve ordered Cioppino ($25) over Fettuccine for $2 more. The Cioppino consisted of calamari, shrimp, clams, mussels, and the fish of the day, which happened to be salmon.  There was a huge amount and Steve could not stop saying how delicious everything was.  There were lots of the shelled fish, and he was full when he was finished.

But….he didn’t realize he wasn’t quite finished, because  I saw the Dolci (Dessert) menu and knew I wanted to share something with him. We decided on the Crème Brulee ($11)  and it was delicious.  It was topped with mint and fresh blueberries as well as A rich and creamy pudding baked custard topped with a layer of carmelized sugar. There wasn’t a bit left when we were finished!

Also available was a wine menu – White, Red, Sparkling and Rose; Sodas and Non-Sodas; Exclusive Bottles of Wine, Bira by the glass and two cocktail specials.  I had an Arnold Palmer ($3.50) which was very tasty.

There is no question that this restaurant will become one of the best in the area.  All of the food was wonderful; the glasses of water were continually being refilled; we were asked often enough but not too often how things were and if we needed anything.

And I forgot to say that when we first sat down we were given slices of a delicious bread with a wonderful Italian dip to put it in.  There was nothing that I could fault during the entire meal.

The total cost was $65 plus the tip which is the going price of eating out now-a-days.  And…as we were walking out the door, a man at the table next to us stopped us to ask how we liked the meal; we talked to his wife and the couple that were with them and they said they could hardly wait to come back – and they hadn’t left yet!  No question!  This is a winner!!!

  1. If you are heading north on what is technically Sports Arena Blvd there is a quick left-turn lane opposite the 8 east entrance, and you’ll be right there. The pic above is the corner of the ‘el’, with Grocery Outlet just around it. Blink and you may miss it. Not a perfect location, but great.

  2. I have been back twice since the first visit and have been pleased and happy each time, as have the people I have been with. As I said originally, this restaurant is a winner!

  3. Based on Judy’s rec we went to “Pezzi…” for dinner tonight.. it was wonderful! And we enjoyed it immensely. We had the Caprese salad, calamari, lobster ravioli.all of which were delicious.the service was outstanding and the servers were charming. We are so happy that they are here and are eager to return.

  4. I walked by there the other day and thought the place pictured is still vacant while the one being reviewed is a couple doors to the right of the photo. The staff gave me a menu after I stopped to take a closer look.

  5. Judy: Great to see your columns again. Do keep up the good work. Will try the latest spot…just on your advice.

  6. I did not know about this restaurant now, I intend to check it out so thank you for the review. I would be interested on future reviews if a mention is made about the menu and if any additional surcharges are imposed by the business owner to cover increased costs/wages or just show a copy of the receipt in photos. Thanks.
