The population of OB is a little over 12,000. Last time I looked at the STVR list, there were 880 in OB. That was 7%. This has probably gone up. And, the figures are just for Ocean Beach’s Planning Board boundaries, what is recognized as OB. There are 30,000 plus people in the 92107 area code. The percentage of STVRs on the east side of Froude just adds to OB’s misery.
The average number of people per housing unit is on the order of 2.2, so 880 whole home STRs equates to 1936 displaced residents, during a housing crisis. The residents of OB don’t allow a Target, but they do roll over for whole home STRs in the community. The whole home STRs increase home prices and rents, and real estate agents perhaps unknowingly communicate these increases across the city pushing some of those on the bubble over the edge into homelessness, which we the tax payers all cover in the form of local taxes. One analysis of LA showed that homelessness caused whole home STRs resulted in a negative cost benefit to the city. We know the city is not going to do anything to change whole home STRs as long as Campbell is D2 councilmember. It is not too early to begin identifying her replacement in 2026 when she terms out. We need a member of the community to step forward who will join Joe LaCava opposing these insidious forms of wealth disparity.
Gary, you make a great point about the number of people very probably displaced, it shows the impact better than the number of houses taken off the rental market.
I went back to my story on this to double check the numbers and just wanted to add this.
The total number of just whole house rentals in the 92107 zip code was 815 at that time.. It would be hard to get the number in OB without going line by line through the spreadsheet to check which are in the OB Planning Board boundaries. I’m going to give it a try.
Of those, 608 or 75% are whole home rentals. That still translates to 1,338 people being displaced just for the whole home rentals alone., The other Tiers are not as popular. There were 198 Tier 2 licenses and only 9 for Tier 1.
I’ve done all the work for you ?. You can enter a zip in the address field of niceneighbors.org STR license search. OR select “Ocean Beach” in the planning area table.
Then select 90 or more nights per year as declared on the license (full-time).
There are over 600 licensed full-time short-term rentals in OB, over 550 full-time, entire unit Airbnb listings. Last I checked the number of housing units in OB was 7958.
So 7.7% of housing in Ocean Beach is Airbnb.
Not sure I understand the point of your comment. You just repeated what I already said. And, the area is not just OB, it is the 92107 area code that covers other areas.

Oh, I see you posted it, I missed that.
