Reader Rant: ‘Bay Ho’s Future — Higher Buildings and Density, More ADU Madness and Loss of Neighborhood Culture’

In the Bay Ho area, the installation of the trolley line required a certain amount of ridership.

Knowing full well the current residential community would not meet that requirement the Bay Ho neighborhood had a change in allowance of building development zoning which will allow the smaller homes to be leveled, and then built up with increased heights and high density. Leading to the rash approval and apparently blind eye to building codes and as many ADU’s and multi-units as possible.

So, if you are wondering what the future holds for Bay Ho, this is what it will be, higher building, high density and more ADU madness, with of course the loss of the current neighborhood culture.

Another truth is that the housing prices for the new builds will not be cheap or even affordable. The lie that all of this building and ADU cramming will resolve the homeless crisis is a flat lie and is driven by greed and kickbacks. Most likely the renters and buyers will be people who will not use the trolley regularly, unless taking the trolley to their Padres box seats, and use their cars daily.

Oh, did I mention cars?

Well, add to the problem these new builds skirt building parking spot requirements with sleight of hand card tricks to avoid having adequate parking spots on the property. So, the streets will be littered with cars parking all over the place, crowding driveways of others, parking hit & runs and an increase in car burglaries and thefts.

The sad truth is this is happening in neighborhoods all over San Diego, and destroying the neighborhood feel we are known for. In a matter of time, we will look like NY, Chicago or some other east coast big city.

I promise in the end none of this will help with homelessness, the streets will be littered, the greedy money grabbers and politicians will move on to their next lie to the good, honest public.

  1. Does anyone remember back in the late 80’s when we used to say “San Diego is full” ?

    Areas which used to be suburbs are quickly being converted to high-dense, urban areas, and just as David S. says, it’s all about money.

    A nine structure 17 unit complex is being built in the backyard of a .45 acre lot on a cul-de-sac at 4601 Almayo Ave in Clairemont, and the developer (SDRE, – a real estate investment company) says “Millennials and Gen Z-ers do not own cars in the typical fashion that we did twenty years ago. They’re taking Ubers. They’re taking public transportation. They’re working from home.”

    Real estate developers and investors are making money hand over fist, and who doubts that much of those profits end up in the coffers of election campaigns ?

    The Almayo property was sold for $1.4 million, well over the valuation shown on other neighboring properties.

    If the 17 units rent for $2500 per month, that’s over half a million gross income per year.

    It’s being done because money is being made, and to hell with the neighbors who are left behind. They will now be ready to sell and you will see a resultant mass conversion to high-density living, with its commensurate troubles.

    Every neighborhood that is being destroyed in San Diego has a history, a character that is now being torn asunder. Quality of life in these neighborhoods is already sinking, with reduced personal safety, increased traffic, increasing numbers of street people, more litter and trash … all the things that used to be associated with the sprawl of a downtown.

    Think about this when you vote next month !

  2. Plus, if we can’t fight the abysmal AB 1287, that entire stretch of Morena will soon be filled with high rise residences. We’re in real trouble.

    1. That is the plan! Bay Ho, Bay Park and all along the trolley line the goal is to over build with ADU’s and high density builds as high as they can get them.
