A Boy’s Tears of Love and Joy and Pride

by Ernie McCray

I’m so enjoying
these joyous moments
I can’t stop
going on and on
about it
with no apologies for it
for the reason that
for years an ex-president
who is seeking the presidency again
has been in our face
since way back when
day after day after day,
acting, literally, in the most melancholic
ways,

standing in the way of joy

in our country

like the moon sometimes

blocks the rays of the sun,

hardly ever a smile on his face

or on his family’s face,

no evidence of love and endearment

between them

anywhere to be found –

so, I can’t help but be in a happy state of mind

especially when,

the other night,

I witnessed a stirring sight,

unfiltered happiness

being expressed,

to my sheer delight,

in its purest form,

as vice-presidential hopeful,

Tim Walz’s son, Gus,

out of his immense pride

for his father’s political rise,

cried openly

in his jubilation,

mouthing

“That’s my dad,”

as he pointed at him

with unmistakable admiration,

the spirit of his love for his father

reaching the hearts of the

convention’s exceedingly ecstatic delegation,

bringing to light

a family’s unabashed affection

for one another.

And since

the presidential candidate’s

family is equally

as devoted to each other

as this boy’s household is

I view his tears

as a sign

that our country might very soon be led

with love and human decency

and that is why

the joy in me

keeps bubbling uncontrollably.

Cry on, Gus.

Your tears of

love and joy

and pride

are a gift to us.

I was raised in a loving and alive home, in a black neighborhood filled with colorful characters in Tucson, Arizona. Such an environment gave me a hint that life has to be grabbed by the tail as tight as a pimple on a mosquito's butt. With no BS and a whole lot of love. So, from those days to now I get up every morning set on making the world a better place. On my good foot*, and I hope my writing reflects that. *an old black expression
