It stood there for years – the second hand sports equipment store at 4811 W Point Loma Blvd — but now it’s up for sale.
The one-story storefront with 2,800 square feet is on the market for $1,850,000. Built in 1947, the building is on a .11 acre site, zoned C-1, with a floor area ratio of .6.
As with any older building in OB that hits the market, there is always speculation that someone will buy the property, demolish the building and throw up a 3-story complex of short-term rentals.
With a building that is 77 years old, it’s hard to see someone actually rehabbing the place and using it as a storefront.
The building shares a corner with a development that is supposed to be an vehicle oil-refill establishment and which has been taking a long time to complete.

This is the OB character that is disappearing.
I’d put the Second Chance Sports on the same level as Nati’s. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
I bought a decent boogie board there a few years back.
3 story? Don’t sell yourself short. How many can you get under 30ft? You won’t need parking.
Apparently the ebb tide is for sale too?? Not sure if it’s the business or the property. Either way, I’m nervous about it since I live so close to it.
Right after you left that comment, TD, one of our fantastic reader-supporters confirmed it — see this: https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/Ebb-Tide/32785034/
I always liked the sticker…
Keep PB out of OB
… and here we are.
The Valvoline next door isn’t under construction. It’s in limbo due to permit violations that seem insurmountable. It cannot be legally constructed to that footprint unless someone successfully bribes the city to reconsider.
Thanks for the update and chuckle. The real bribery is at much higher levels, like the one involving one of the largest redevelopment projects in San Diego history, just down the road so to speak, over in the sports arena area.
Second Chance Sports has been a great source for me and my family over the years. The folks who run it are wonderful and so helpful! You will be missed. I would like to add a note of sadness that Second Chance is leaving OB! Thank you!!
If you ever want to take a peek at the building permit for a site, go here:
https://www.sandiego.gov/insidesd/easily-access-permits-new-online-permit-finder-tool
Read the information then click on the Permit Finder hyperlink. Find the property you’re interested in on the map and click on the little round and/or diamond shaped icon. I think the round icon indicates closed permits and the diamond icon indicates active permits. Info on permit status will show up on the left. It’s a little complex to navigate but be curious. Click on any link you find to navigate around.
From what I can figure, the Valvoline property doesn’t have an approved Coastal Development Permit.
