Biden’s ‘Disastrous’ Debate Performance: A Blessing in Disguise

Colleen O’Connor’s views do not necessarily reflect those of  the OB Rag.

By Colleen O’Connor

Uniformly, pundits, (yes even on MSNBC) called Biden’s weak performance in the Trump-Biden Presidential Debate “disastrous.” It took only five minutes of watching to understand the real perils the country faces.

He walked on stage struggling, coughed repeatedly, slurred, misspoke and ominously looked more aged and feebler than any thought possible.

The Democrats are “in panic mode” as more than one liberal pundit remarked. Who can they find to replace an obviously aged president, who believes strongly that only he can defeat former President Trump, and that seemingly is without any truth tellers in his inner circle.

He “had a cold.” Yes, but he just lost the election. Full stop. Period. He needs to exit stage right. For the sake of the country.

Phones were ringing off the hooks of political insiders. What to do? Who to replace him as the Democratic nominee? Who can tell him? Will he listen? What now?!!!

And why did his “insider circle of the best and the brightest” even suggest this debate? Why gamble? Why did they position the President on the right side of the stage so he was always looking sideways at the moderators instead of at Trump? They chose this debacle.

And why didn’t his wife, Jill, pull him aside and tell him the truth? It takes courage, but more— much more is at stake than a man’s wounded ego.

What now? Provide an exit.

He is ill. Now, or at the Democratic convention. Biden must release all of his committed delegates on the floor.

Let those assembled vote for the younger generation of able Democrats. Kamal Harris cannot win. Look to the Governors. Someone alert, intelligent, well spoken, articulate and burnished under fire of real issues affecting real people. Not talking heads dining in white tablecloth restaurants.

Do it NOW. Save the party. Save the country. Let the real replacement race begin.

For example, Governor Whitman of Michigan. Governor Newsom of California. Congressman Jamie Raskin of Maryland. Pick someone. Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.

Pick from a courageous, experienced crop. Try for the middle of the country (currently suffering the most). And. hurry up!

Democrats must stop hand-wringing. Unite quickly. Beseech Jill Biden to coax her husband to abandon the campaign for the sake of his own health and that of the country. And Harris needs to exit gracefully as well.

The debate disaster may, in fact, be a blessing in disguise. It is that or keep praying for “Divine Intervention.”

  1. Hair on fire! Save the country! Harris? No. Will never happen. Newsome? Too toxic (see DeSantis). Biden looked like Feinstein walking. Put Gramps to bed looking. Like a walking skull. Incoherent speech. And I wanted Biden, sad to say. There isn’t any person who has the right combination to sit as a President or Vice President and that is very disturbing for this country. A cold? Huh? Wow! What a choice.

  2. 100% agree. A true blessing in disguise. Thankfully it happened before it was too late to replace him. Dump Harris (why trade one problem for another?) A Newsome Whitmer ticket could be a real winning one in a race directed at a national audience and voters in electoral states typically focused more on style and appearance over substance.

  3. It’s really too bad this debate didn’t catch Biden on one of his good days, like the State of the Union did. We have politicians that are older, like Bernie Sanders for instance, that are still sharp, but yes Biden was like my grandpa before he completely went away. He had his good days but…they didn’t last and I would not have expected Biden to still be here at the end of another 4 years.

But I will still vote NEVER TRUMP because the people Biden has around him are SO much better informed than the lying utterly depraved POS that currently surround Trump who will most certainly be a magnitude worse than last time…

But did anybody else notice that everything Trump said was a fricking lie? All of it, just spouting lie after lie after lie, but he did keep getting them out. See what Adderall can do for ya? Better than cocaine and it’s legal when your Dr. Ronnie can give it away like candy…

His biggest claim to fame over Biden is that he plays a better golf game as if that matters at all. But of course he’s been reportedly caught CHEATING! That certainly is no big surprise is it?

Oh, and did that little spiel about him being in the best shape of the last 25 years while even getting in that he’s weighing a little less…does ANYBODY really believe that? When he looks like the ultimate poster boy for a major heart attack and/or stroke? Nothing but lies.

But I will admit he’s got one thing correct; that there IS a 2-tiered legal system in this country. One for the wealthy and one for the rest of us who can’t afford armies of lawyers. Or buying off lawyers by turning them into judges to delay any case you might have against you. Imagine if you (or I) were in court for felonies, and then broke ten court orders during the trial! Think where you’d be…after doing that ONCE!

Then just hours ago Biden does this:

WOW! FED UP Biden Finally LIGHTS UP Trump in NC Speech

  4. Biden did much better today in North Carolina because he had a strong speech written by a good speechwriter that he could read from a teleprompter.

The “debate” required extemporaneous responses to questions, and Biden
had been over-coached for a week to offer data-backed proof of his far-from-the-average-voter accomplishments — a tall and tedious order for anyone, especially an 81-year-old man with an undisclosed degenerative medical disorder.

The Democratic Party’s wishful thinking with candidate Joe Biden is worse than the Republic Party’s train wreck with Donald Trump. Whatever happened to “doing the right thing?” Both parties are sold out and corrupt
and the voters are supposed to save democracy by choosing between these two candidates? We are up the creek without a paddle.

  5. NYT Editorial Board…Biden should drop out. “The greatest public service Mr. Biden can now perform is to announce that he will not continue to run for re-election.”

  6. Biden had very little to gain and everything to lose by debating Trump. The latter is what happened. He should have refused to debate a convicted Felon. On a positive note, Almost any other Dem other than Harris should be able to beat Trump. Probably no one remembers, but Bernie scored higher than Trump in hypothetical polls in 2016. Warren and Newsom are the Very Best that Democrats can offer now, IMO.

    1. “Probably no one remembers” Bernie Sanders? Sanders was derailed by Democratic National Committee perfidy in favor of Hillary Clinton, to the disappointment of many voters, especially young people. I have grandkids who wrote-in Bernie in recent primaries! Bernie is the influencer for any progressive legislation that has come out of the Biden Administration — lower prescription drug prices, raises in the minimum wage, toning-down the U.S. love-fest with Israel ad getting more aid for Gaza Palestinians.
Bernie is the best candidate we’ve ever had —-the most idealistic, the most practical, the most humane, the most intelligent. Too much of a good thing for Americans, I guess.

      .

  7. the nyt has become an utter joke, in particular the “editorial board”. why aren’t they asking for that gish galloping filthy husk djt to drop out for the good of the country? there should be a terrible, continuous, deafening din for the convicted felon, defeated ex-president to step away, but no.

all the media has been abjectly horrible in its both siderism and normalizing of trump. but suddenly – where is that bothsiderism now? the editorial board should offer their mass resignation for the good of the country.

    1. The New York Times editorial board call to swap out presidential candidate Joe Biden was a public service. Of course they should excoriate Trump for his incessant lying and distorting of facts. They could even demand he too step away from this race for re-election, but the entire GOP supports Trump and he is also leading in the polls.

The Democratic Party and Biden’s inner circle should never have let Biden’s candidacy happen, but they were weak, sentimental, self-interested and die-hard, so opted to play it safe by protecting Joe and misleading the American public. And don’t forget, the Biden camp had asked for that debate.

But the NYT editorial board might galvanize the change in direction that is so desperately needed. There is national shock and revulsion at Biden’s status and the truth is voters deserve better candidates than either Trump or Biden.

  8. The question appears to be purely academic because he is not stepping down. For one thing, his wife won’t let him.

  9. Colleen, you are right on all points. It was clear the moment Biden shuffled out on stage that something was seriously wrong. Saying he had a bad night is like saying the Titanic had a rough maiden voyage. He appeared physically debilitated. If you’ve ever experienced low blood pressure or low blood sugar, the symptoms were familiar: disorientation, slurred speech, unsteady gait. If what we’re seeing is a steep physiological decline, the situation will just get worse — this decision could be out of his hands, and soon.

  10. AND from Bob Woodard. Biden debate performance a ‘political h-bomb’. And where was the press all these years? How did it happen?!!

  11. And from Sidney Blumenthal: “I saw western civilization pass before my eyes as Joe Biden drowned.”

  12. The greatest public service for Trump would to ALSO drop out. His brain is glitching just as badly as Biden’s is, and it is completely obvious if anybody has taken care of an elder with Dementia and watched any of his rally speeches.

JMS: Of course there are those of us who remember Bernie’s polling numbers…which is why Hillary’s political operatives corrupted the primary against him and literally cheated her way into being the only candidate, and I knew she was going to lose her ass even when she won the popular vote (which wasn’t all that popular). Remember her $250,000 20-minute speech to the Wall St. bankers that said nothing will change…and what a bloodthirsty Butcher of Libya she turned out to be.

Bluntly, I think Bernie could STILL beat Trump at this point…he’s far sharper than either Biden or Trump even at his age.

tom otoole: This is NOT the NYT that published the Pentagon Papers, it’s the corporate headquarters that promoted the LIAR Judith Miller in the run-up to Wbush’s War Crime of invading Iraq. That rag (no offense meant to the OB RAG) lost all relevancy long ago, and is just another neoliberal mouthpiece for the MIC and wealthy bankers.

Carl: if it’s his wife, she isn’t nearly as intelligent as she thinks she is.

Gravitas: I watched the hope of western civilization to GROW UP pass before my eyes when Reagan was put in office. All I see now is the thrashings of a dying Empire because every president since has been a Reagan-clone in policy, both foreign and domestic. Our western-style democracy was hanging by a thread when Carter was elected, and then the GOP pulled exactly the same kind of crap they are now.

What’s changed since? The Democrats moved rightward and took the place of the pre-1980s GOP while the Republicans barreled on down the Fascist path to glory following their ‘Dear Leader’ Ronnie the Teflon President. Anybody else see the social and political parallels between Der Fuhrer Trump and Ray-Gun Reagan? Same kind of worship going on, putting an authoritarian right wing clown on a pedestal like a god, naming an airport after him when he personally blew up the air traffic controller’s union (thereby putting us all at risk), paying off the Iranians to hold the hostages until AFTER the election… corruption at its finest!

The funny thing is that if Reagan was running for president now he’d have to run as a Democrat because he isn’t extreme enough for the current crop of GOP lunatics. He’d fit right in to the DNC…

Let’s get Bernie to do the 2nd debate with Trump. I’d just LOVE to listen to that because he’d f**king destroy that fat dumb-ass frat boy!
    ___

And Gravitas: Where was the press? WHAT press? You mean the 5 or 6 megalithic corporate media owned by right-wing billionaires that have sucked up nearly all the ‘press’ both local, state, and national that used to exist in this country since there isn’t any anti-monopoly regulations any longer? People like Frank are few and far between in this country, ya know?

Hey Frank, could you be bought out by enough money from some rightwing corporation or is the RAG a love story? HA!

      1. Yes it’s beyond sad. But it certainly isn’t really what I wish to be correct about at all. Rather the opposite in fact.

This was a question posed by a father in the comment section of an article I recently read:

“How is it that a convicted felon runs for president when my daughter who has felonies can’t even get a student loan, or vote, or get a decent job?”

Yep, about the only thing Trump has gotten correct in all of his enormous amounts of whining is that this country IS a 2-tiered legal system. But obviously it is extremely skewed to benefit the wealthy (and they know it!) like him who ever-so-rarely end up facing a judge. A country owned and operated by plutocrat billionaires just won’t let that happen too often to their own Status Class. Wouldn’t want to set a bad precedent now would they?

I have a hard-bound book on a shelf written by a man that lived through the Gilded Age of the 1890s that talks explicitly about the Class War (with incredible cartoons, pictures, and photographs that pointedly skewer the wealthy powerful). I found it in a box donated to the 2nd hand where I was also the fix-it guy where I wore a bunch of different hats to keep my older friend’s shop open for 13 years more years as she was too ridden with arthritis etc to really do it herself. A perk was getting to pick things out! First published in 1910, this is a 7th printing original from 1912.

From Amazon: “This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original”; https://www.amazon.com/War-What-George-R-Kirkpatrick/dp/1162804424

I think old George would feel right at home in the world of today, and probably still be sickened and horrified at how much worse the Class War has become. He never thought there would be billionaires I bet, but just the multi-millionaires were bad enough then!

“This book is dedicated to the victims of the civil war in industry; that is, to my brothers and sisters of the working class, the class who furnish the blood and tears and cripples and corpses in all wars—yet win no victories for their own class.”
        ___
Eleven days left before sentencing. Will the murderous very real threats of the MAGATS against the judge and his family (and everybody else involved) make him so fearful that he just can’t help cowering in fear? Fascists attack and kill people, anyone with the knowledge of 20th Century history know this as a hard-learned fact, and obviously it is happening here. Will he run away?

Dr. Tom, if it was you or I what would the probable outcome be with a history like his while still facing multiple felonies in different states? A kiss on his butt, a slap on his wrist, a few months (like Cohen got)? Or will the ringleader who proved last Thursday that he is still exactly the same person, one with no remorse or guilt or conscience, get at least a 4 year sentence for just one of the 34 felony counts he was found guilty of?

        sealintheSelkirks

        1. Yes, I agree Trump should get at least 4-years in prison. Quite a few years ago my father said to me, “It is a very great mistake that Nixon is not going to jail for several years.”

  13. Sorry folks it’s far too late for a candidate change. The Democratic Party and Biden have been in denial far too long about Biden’s competence, not to mention Harris. Suck it up and get ready for four more years of Trump.

  14. Something I have yet to hear discussed is that if people feel President Biden is so impaired that he should not be running for President then why is it o.k. for him to continue as President for the rest of his term and not resign now?
    /s/ Chris Kennedy

  15. AND here comes first poll/Sunday. According to a CBS News/You Gov poll out Sunday — a whopping 72 percent of Americans believe Biden does not have the “mental and cognitive health to serve as president.”

    Still waiting for more polls?

  16. Joe Mama: I agree, probably too late for a replacement. Worse, there really isn’t anyone else except maybe Bernie that could pull it off.

Question: Why isn’t there any call for pathological liar Trump to step down as the MAGA candidate is ALSO showing serious signs of Dementia though his symptoms are different though similar in effects? Isn’t anybody paying any attention to what this guy is saying?

Obviously not. Both are patently unfit for office!

But you better hope your last sentence doesn’t happen because it isn’t going to be just a repeat of his last 4 years of vapid stupidity and massive corruption and the largest increase in national debt in history. The six Fascists on the Supreme Court just legalized the absolute immunity of Presidents to not be held to any sort of legal standard other than…to kill anyone they want whenever they want for any reason. This is NOT a joke:

    https://www.vox.com/scotus/358292/supreme-court-trump-immunity-dictatorship

Since Biden now has the absolute authority to assassinate his political rivals before Trump possibly gets back in office according to SCOTUS… In effect, he now has the power of a King to save this country from the Fascists that are trying to take it over until January of 2024 up to and including permanently removing the 6 SCOTUS judges…

Is do unto others that are publicly saying they are going to do unto you as soon as they get back into power starting to make a lot more sense? But the floodgates of Fascist Dictatorship have now been opened wide and we don’t live in the US anymore. Does the current government have what it takes to stop this coup by the force the MAGA is drooling over attaining in November??

Do they really love ‘Democracy’ enough? If only someone would have taken out Hitler in 1933, eh? I read a sci-fi novel once about that, I think it was Harry Turtledove’s work. Interesting premise…

    sealintheSelkirks

    1. Why “too late” for a replacement?
      It’s never too late, eh?
There’s no time like the present.

Dems seem to have partnered up, over the years, with the “college” crowd, intellectuals, creatives and otherwise “thoughtful/progressive” people.

Why cant’ they beat the MAGAts? (the “deplorables”).
Why can’t they field an adequate replacement?
Or… perhaps more importantly, why couldn’t they field a solid candidate in the first place?

  17. Biden became the Democratic Party’s candidate for President in 2020 by fiat from his friend Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn, a South Carolina Democratic kingmaker who didn’t want a distracting Dem fight beyond that state’s primary to distract from the run against Trump. Biden was declared the winner, and that marked an astonishing abrupt end to Bernie’s very strong showing.

Candidate Biden had said he was running for one term. Later on, President Biden changed his mind and announced for re-election in ’24, even though he then would be age 81, a cause for public dismay. But the Democratic National Committee honored President Biden’s wish and he became the Party’s sole uncontested candidate: there had been no Dem primaries for the office. So most delegates to the Democratic Convention in Chicago in August ’24 are pledged to President Biden.

But it is not at all “too late” to win the coming election with a strong Democrat. If Biden resigns, there are many prominent Democratic presidential contenders ready to take on Trump — CA Governor Gavin Newsom with a team and a warchest among them. Also mentioned are Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, MN Senator Amy Klobuchar, Ohio Senaor Sherrod Brown, GA Senator Raphael Warnock, TX Rep. Julian Castro.

Biden needs to release his Dem Convention delegates (who are ethically but not legally bound to him) to be lobbied by candidates there and to vote freely to nominate a strong Democratic presidential standard-bearer for the November election.

Conventions lately have been celebratory political party showcases and coronations, but they once were — and can again be — places where decisions on presidential nominees are contested and settled in smoke-free rooms and revealed after suspenseful roll-call votes of state delegations. It’s how John F. Kennedy was nominated for President in Los Angeles in 1960. It can happen
    again.

  18. The latest polling has all of those other potential candidates loosing to Trump in hypothetical matchups, especially Newsom. According to the polls that I personally have seen, the only person that matches against the Combover Cheeto is Kamala, and that is a virtual tie. Sadly, I am not a fan of hers unless it’s against Trump.

  19. “For the Good of the Country, Donald Trump Should Leave the Presidential Race”. Philadelphia Enquirer

  20. We know how influential print newspapers are these days, but I am glad to read that the Inquirer and the Globe are calling for Biden to go. (I am a sucker for 19th century forms like newspapers.) I am waiting for some similar sign of life from the nearly-moribund Los Angeles Times.

  21. It DOES look like Harris now. Maybe not a bad strategy ? Women are going to determine this election more than any other group. Might as well accentuate the positive.

    1. If you are all rah-rah for Biden and his handlers, you probably won’t like this rather informative piece.

That Trump is on the same downward mental spiral with his long-time ex-staffers telling the same kind dementia stories about him (as does his own campaign speeches; hoo-boy do they!). That they are saying the same thing about Trump’s deteriorating mental state doesn’t make this feel any better since he is a bloated god-figure to his cultists that are neither rational nor mentally competent…but they will vote for him no matter what. There is no getting through to a majority of MAGATS. There are, however, Republicans that are talking sense.

The Republicans did this exact same thing when Reagan’s brain blew its fuses, completely malfunctioned in the mid-80s which they hid it from the public at the end of his 1st term, too, just as Biden’s group has done for this last year. BIG mistake, DNC strategists, and I use that term reluctantly. The Democrats could have had a full year to turn this around…

And now the GOP is obviously repeating what they did with Reagan. Remember the “Trees cause air pollution, too” on national TV? Trump has his rah-rah handlers doing the same thing, but Trump is a loud-mouthed aggressive lying bully which is such a he-man figure, too. Especially when he talks about sinking battery-powered boats with sharks ten yards away and it’s better to be electrocuted that eaten by a shark. Hannibal Lecter anybody? His fused keep blowing, too, just in a different way is all.

Both political groups are completely blind and only concerned with…what? Ego? Power? Money? Status? Yes.
      ___
JMS: Bluntly, I would far rather see Rep. Katie Porter, Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett, Gov. Whitmer; there are plenty of better qualified women than than Harris who has hoof-in-mouth disease the ex-crappy DA who thought jailing low-income parents to teach their kids to quit ditching school was a good idea…REALLY? So those parents not only lost what little money that they would have made from crappy jobs they had or lost the jobs for not showing up that day (crap jobs tend to not have any wiggle room about showing up), they ended up with fines and/or bail costs so they would NOT be leaving said kids HOME ALONE.

Bluntly, she was just a ‘minority woman place-setting’ campaign strategy, which after 4 years hasn’t made any kind of name for herself that I can see.

When it comes down to it in November, I will vote NEVER TRUMP of course, but I certainly am not voting FOR Biden.

  22. France’s is right. Still time Biden should release his delegates. Let challengers schedule debates. You know Democracy! Also why not claim immunity and stack the Court! FDR only had to threaten such an action to get the SC to shift positions. Be bold. Be brave.

  23. Today I’m changing my mind about what may become a chaotic free-for-all at the Dem Convention in August, after watching the ABC conversation between George Stephanopoulis with President Biden last night. It was more disturbing than Biden’se previous “debate” with Trump. We got another “only I can save you” message, but this time it came from hubristic and damaged President Joe Biden. Maybe the U.S. needs a constitutionally-limited single six-year term for U.S. presidents, like Mexico, which just elected its own first woman leader.

When you think about the logistics between now and the election on November 4, there is no better Democratic candidate for President than Vice President Kamala Harris. She uniquely holds national high office, has solid elective credentials and broad political experience; she is intelligent, boldly articulate, vigorous and beautiful; and she is a woman of color.

Trump’s gross macho style will not destabilize Kamala Harris as it does with his male opponents — she will not need to compare her golf scores to make debate points — and she will verbally confront Trump’s lies about the past and will express a truthful vision for this country’s better future. She has no handicaps.

It also matters that Vice President Kamala Harris offers an orderly, seemly and legitimate transfer of authority should Biden resign from office. As half the existing Biden/Harris ticket, she can properly claim the cash millions being held by the Democratic National Committee earmarked for the 2024 presidential election.

Kamala’s candidacy will galvanize disillusioned young people to get out and vote, to feel hopeful about helping elect the first-ever President who is a woman of color. Kamala’s candidacy will inspire support from women and men from across party lines who believe we need the protections of Roe v. Wade and the rule of law applied equally to everyone. Kamala will be the sorely-needed breath of fresh air in what has been a desultory anxiety-filled race. Kamala Harris is the Democrats’ dream replacement candidate for President in 2024. And she’s already in the house and prepared to beat Donald Trump.

  24. We lefties were correct, again, about what has been happening to the US. The 1950s, Viet Nam, and Nixon, and Reagan, and all the corporate-bought neoliberal presidents that have followed with the same economic, domestic, and foreign policies whether R or D, have led us to this moment.

The establishment Democrats didn’t listen to us, poo-poo’d and denigrated the Lefties, called us all unrealistic idealists, un-American, or traitors to the flag etc etc. I certainly hoped that Sinclair Lewis was not a prophet when I first read his book. Looks like he was entirely correct, eh? Like Global Warming consequences we are seeing now with our climate, being correct but ignored can be vastly depressing.

  29. Would that be Chelsea Clinton?
I hope so. We don’t need to look to the past: we need to look forward.

  30. Harris will choose Josh Shapiro as her VP running mate. The election probably cannot be won without Pennsylvania. That’s my prediction.

  31. Oh Please! I hope neither one of them!

I watched a short speech vid (couple of years ago I guess) given by Chelsea on the dangers of smoking marijuana. I do not remember where or whom she was paid by to give it. It was behind a outdoor podium like at a college or something, but I vividly recall her giving her listeners her broad science background (paraphrasing here) about ‘how it is still the “Gateway Drug” and how so many people are going Psychotic when they use it so it should always remain highly illegal.’ Maybe Chelsea confused it with meth, but I doubt it. She’s as right wing as her mom, obviously, and this country desperately needs to make a sharp left turn away from Reaganism and neoliberal right wing Disaster Capitalism that has infected it.

Besides, that statement alone should disqualify her from ever holding any political office but then there is no end to finding a paying gig in some right wing Prohibitionist think tank…maybe the Heartland Institute would be a good fit for dear Chelsea?

Want to look forward, Frances? Jasmine Crockett, Katie Porter, people of that ilk are highly intelligent people like who should be taking the reins up. The Goldwater Girl and her backwards-looking daughter…NO!

Gravitas: Biden got in because people hated Trump; Hillary’s disastrous campaign against Trump is NOT in her favor, and I’m not really sure it would work for her because so many people hated her/still hates her. She hasn’t changed her rightwing DINO corporate-greed personality any more than her husband’s former major political donor (Trump) has, even though Trump did change parties.

As for the latest poll for the Butcher of Libya, where public slave auctions are now held in the capital city by warlords put in power by the US/NATO when she was Sec of State…just as she pushed hard for Wbush’s War Crime of invading Iraq in the Senate; a loud NO. And if you need more convincing, look up her disastrous whistleblown speech to those Wall St. banker types where she bluntly promised them that if elected “Nothing will change” to affect them.

Okay, heading for 110’F again today I’m guessing. Things to do.
