On Saturday, March 2, a woman in her 20s suffered serious injuries after falling 25 feet off Sunset Cliffs onto the jagged rocks below.

The as-yet unidentified woman fell from street level at about 2 p.m. at 900 Sunset Cliffs Blvd.

Lifeguards and firefighters rescued her and she was airlifted to a hospital by a fire department helicopter.

A video posted on Facebook by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department shows the rescue with serious injuries.

“This was a fast, efficient and safe rescue because of teamwork between firefighters, lifeguards and the crew of copter 3,” firefighters said.

No other information on the woman’s medical condition was available.

As locals know, Sunset Cliffs Natural Park in the Ocean Beach area of San Diego features “dramatic cliff formations and caves” along the 1.5-mile shoreline.

This time of year is the most dangerous because of the nature of the soil. When the soil gets moist from repeated rains, it softens and crumbles easily. When that same dirt is dry, it is almost like concrete. Whenever I dig a hole at my place, I get through topsoil to a hard soil with a lot of sand in it that is really hard to dig. I pour in a bucket of water, come back in ten minutes, and I can effortlessly sink a shovel into that same ground. The bluff edges are ALWAYS dangerous, but are really treacherous during the rainy season. It may look dry and fine on the top layer but the ground will stay moist for some time below that.
