With another drawing Tuesday for the ever-growing $1.12 billion Mega Millions jackpot, San Diegans who are feeling the lottery fever are hoping for a little bit of luck — some turning to specific stores with a track record of winning.
There are only a handful of stores out of the thousands of lotto retailers across California that regularly sell winning tickets, including ones to claim the largest prizes.
The California Lottery has a special designation for these retailers, aptly — if not obviously — called “lucky stores.”
According to the lotto, the criteria to be considered “lucky” includes: selling at least one $100,000 or higher winning ticket, paying out an average of 400 winning tickets each week, and paying out an average of $4,000 in winning tickets per week.
So, here are the local “lucky stores”:
- Newport Farms Market (Ocean Beach): 5004 Newport Ave., San Diego, 92107
- Village Store (Point Loma): 1145 Rosecrans St., San Diego, 92106

Why is it that our government loves to punish some addictions but then paradoxically also loves to make loads of money off the other addictions they promote? The extremely addictive drug tobacco immediately comes to mind as I recently saw an old ad that said “9 out of 10 doctors prefer Camels” and, even as it has become more ‘socially’ unacceptable, the government is still making bank off the extreme taxes imposed on the sale of cigarettes. And vaping tobacco has become a thing, too, I’ve noticed.
Then there is the extremely addictive drug alcohol that is also another excellent tax revenue source….
So one has a better chance of being hit by lightning, dying of a coconut falling on your head, or being elected president than winning a big lotto? Wow.
We humans love our addictions, don’t we? I’ve seen people on food stamps spend their last couple of dollars on these things.
I lived in South Lake Tahoe winter of ’73 to try ‘snowsurfing’ on my Snurfer Super Racing model and worked at IHOP just down the road from Stateline and the casinos. I saw how damaging it was to those who were addicted that came in at all hours. The late night crowd of serious gamblers mixed with party crowd tourists and one could always catch pieces of the conversations. I heard how they’d put up their pink slips on their cars, their house deeds, spent every last dime because somebody had to be ‘the winner’ and certainly it was their turn.
Don’t people that gamble get the concept of THE HOUSE ALWAYS WINS and everybody else is a loser? Those that are most addicted to shelling out cash for these stupid things are statistically from lower economic groups who can least afford it. The propaganda surrounding lotteries is intense and very, very good as the gov-hired administrator company owners hire only the best psychologists to design those ads to hook their addicts…
Want to fund necessary social services? Schools? Etc? Cut the military budget in half and spread that out. A half Trillion dollars across the country instead of giving it to the wealthy weapons manufactures sounds like a fine idea to me. Besides which the Pentagon can’t even pass its own financial audits so why are we required to throw good money after bad?
But then I guess we are not a sensible society, eh?
It’s time to get rid of the lottery
States should not rely on a scam to fund much-needed services.

What We’ve Lost Playing the Lottery
The games are a bonanza for the companies that states hire to administer them. But what about the rest of us?
