‘Burger Kook’ Moving Into Ocean Beach

Another burger joint is moving onto Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach.

Oh boy! Another burger joint at the beach. This one just doors down from Hodad’s.

Yes, it seems that Burger Kook is taking over the former ChickenHeadz spot at 5026 Newport. A Rag reporter showed up in front of the place this morning, Monday, Feb. 12 to check it out and this is what he found (see photos).

A former lawyer and current grassroots activist, I have been editing the Rag since Patty Jones and I launched it in Oct 2007. Way back during the Dinosaurs in 1970, I founded the original Ocean Beach People’s Rag - OB’s famous underground newspaper -, and then later during the early Eighties, published The Whole Damn Pie Shop, a progressive alternative to the Reader.

      1. Does anyone have a review of what was ChickenHeadz? I just re-read the 3 year old post about Chickenheadz moving in and it mentioned that the 2 guys doing it used to work at Hodad’s. Is this a trend, Chris?

      2. Burger Kook catered a party I attended last Summer. Talked to some of the employees. Ryan Cunningham who started Burger Kook worked for Hodad’s at some point. I think he was the manager. You can find out more info on his Linked In page.

          1. Well like I said, I only know this because BK catered a party I attended. I thought they were pretty good so I researched more info about them. Some of the employees working at that party also told me about the Hodad’s connection.

  1. Maybe they hope to get folks who don’t want to wait in line at Hodad’s? Hodad’s is one of my fave spots in OB. My husband and I shared one of their awesome strawberry malts, fries and cheeseburgers yesterday for my birthday. We love the food and the staff there.

  2. Another burger place. I love burgers, but do people think about saturation when they open up a business? I hate seeing them open and shut within a few years. So many untapped cuisines ripe for OB….

  3. I imagine that most of the new place’s business will be from customers at Sunshine, especially in the evening after Hodads closes at 9 PM.
