Bill Walton: ‘Todd Gloria Has Lied to Us’

By Bill Walton/ Times of San Diego / September 15, 2023

The nightmare continues. When people treat you like they don’t care, believe them.

Todd Gloria, in his more than 3 1/2 years as mayor of what used to be America’s Finest City, has lied to us. He lied to us about who he is, what he’s done, and what he’s going to do. These lies make us distrust him and his homeless policies.

Todd Gloria’s ongoing misinformation propaganda campaign promoting the terrific job he’s doing is contrary to the lives that the citizens and residents of San Diego are forced to live every day, all because of his failed leadership, policies, choices and decisions. …

Todd Gloria is a career politician. He has represented us as our elected official his entire professional life. I supported Todd Gloria, I voted for him, I hosted him, and raised funds and awareness for him. That has turned out to be as big a mistake as I’ve ever made. I will never make that mistake again. …

Still, Todd Gloria continues to mislead everyone with his regular press releases, form letters, and fundraising appeals that he sends out explaining and promoting the wonderful job that he’s doing to make our city and lives clean, safe and healthy. In Todd Gloria’s most recent propaganda that I’ve seen, he claims that he’s using “every” tool and resource at his disposal to address and prevent homelessness. “Every” is an all encompassing word. What are these tools and resources? Where are the results?

Todd Gloria claims to have “expanded” street outreach, shelter capacity, and safe parking programs, and initiated policies to build more housing. “Expanded” is a deceptively ambiguous word. What are the numbers? Where are the results?

  1. Absolute BS. What a clown Bill Walton is. Notably, Bill offers no solutions to homelessness himself. What’s his proposal? It sounds Bill just wants to arrest all the homeless, but he’s not honest enough to come right out and say that.

    1. Judd,

Bill did and has offered solutions. He did so last October at USD and here is a link to that…you should become more informed before jumping to conclusions…

  2. I’ve never liked Gloria, not as district councilperson or in any other role, civic or private. But this Walton rant is ridiculous. Walton’s accusations that Gloria is a liar, and demands that Gloria prove claims/deeds done by Gloria are true, are not accompanied by any coherent proof/documentation by Walton that they are NOT true.

And Walton’s attitude toward homeless people is questionably contorted. Are they “the homeless [who] continue to live wherever they want, trash our city, do whatever they want, whenever they want”; are they “con-artists, scammers, shufflers, and often criminals” (created by Gloria!); or were they once dignified, self-respecting folks until Gloria “stripped the homeless of their dignity and self respect”?

No one is benefiting from reading this Walton screed. It really doesn’t deserve the web space.

    1. Wether or not it deserves the web space is kind of a non starter. He simply reelects the views many have. Despite the true suffering homeless people are going through, many are understandably frustrated and fed up, right or wrong. Even in Hillcrest there’s been some physical confrontations with the unhoused.

      1. Thanks, Chris, but iving/not giving an online microphone to ranters is definitely a starting point. Spreading unsubstantiated and inconsistent screeds is not helpful to progressive, healthy democracies.
Walton should hold public meetings and those who pay attention to him might show up. Great! Spare influencing the rest of the San Diegans who live online exclusively w/o peer-reviewed recognized journalism/analytical input or aren’t inclined to do their own factual research.
It’s not helpful or OK for NBC/Welker to give Trump insanity world-wide notice, nor is it OK for the Murdoch media and offshoots to broadcast lies and insane conspiracies. Might as well just ask Peter Navarro or Carl DeMaio or MTG or Mr. Pillow-guy to opine on OBRag pages!

        1. That’s certainly an overreach! Some people like what he has to say; some wish he would run for mayor. It’s a valid viewpoint, despite its vagueness and some of its incoherence, plus it is wise to keep track of Walton’s views of the unhoused. He has also endorsed the plan to erect an unhoused camp off of Miramar Air station.

          1. Ii know it’s futile to argue w/Rag devotees. but calling something “valid” despite its “vagueness” and “incoherence” is pretty weird.

Definition, valid: cogent sound solid well-grounded conclusive good convincing logical just compelling well-founded telling strong tested accurate authentic binding certified correct confirmed determinative credible effective efficacious, to name a few.

            Missing are “vague” and “incoherent.”

            1. Uh, Honesty, pretty much everybody in the US is entitled to a gun, sadly. You have to reach a pretty high bar to take away someone’s firearms. Too high, IMHO.

Frankly, I’d rather people used public forums more and firearms less.

              1. No, people who pose a danger to others are not entitled. There are laws that prohibit them from buying and owning. Is everyone reading the Rag to young to know the old “you can’t shout ‘fire’ in a crowded theater”?

                  1. Me thinks you don’t read too carefully, but that’s OK. It’s your platform, feel free to reveal everything you’ve got inside your head.

                1. Honesty, be honest! How many times have you read a news story in the last week/month/year where someone who shouldn’t have access to a gun have committed acts of gun violence?

BTW, although I don’t support right wing wing nuts like MTG, etc., I would be ashamed of Frank if he censored their comments, not that they are likely to comment on this site.

                  1. Thankfully Frank let’s guys let me have my say, even if we’re different politically. I just appreciate it when he kicks out those annoying YIMBYs and young people who dare to come on here and say we should be more housing. They are SO ANNOYING! GET A JOB AND QUIT COMPLAINING ABOUT THE COST OF HOUSING!

You’re doing great Frank and I feel so at home here on the pages of the Rag (even if a lot of what you say is too “progressive” for my tastes, you just kill it on all this housing stuff)

                    1. I’m no YIMBY but you really think younger people who are financially struggling just to pay rent should just go away and quit complaining? What about us older non home owners who could face the same issue in the near future?

                    1. I love crickets. Anyway, failure of entitlement restrictions is a whole other issue, one that causes much sorrow and pain.

  3. While I have problems with Gloria on a lot of issues, his policies toward homelessness is not one of them. I have personally seen a reduction in the homeless population on the streets of Hillcrest which I attribute to his recent policies. He gets a bad rap in the pages of this illustrious publication because he refuses to bend to the progressive wing of the Democratic party as respects homelessness which acts like rocket fuel to the populist Republicans

    1. Or because the Homeless who used to be in Hillcrest have moved someplace else, like the canyons of Golden Hill nearby. Or possibly the San Diego River, a perennial condo-complex for them.

    2. A reduction of homelessness in Hillcrest? Propoganda commentary.
Carl, our eyes don’t decieve us, the numbers have not diminished. To the contrary, the numbers of evicted are increasing.Worsened by SB9 and the mere threat of SB10, evictions catatrophically continue to increase at exponential rates.
Less than 3-5% of the City’s budget for homelessness is dedicated towards PREVENTING HOMELESSNESS. There is no money in preserving existing affordable housing for the Gloria Hole Fealty Bunch.

  4. Mayor Todd’s MO seems to be to operate behind the scenes, behind people’s backs. Him and Elo-Rivera I do not feel trust. Georgette Gomez lost in D9 for playing politics. Career politicians who are there for the next ladder rung suck. My opinion.

  5. I made a mistake I voted for Todd Gloria. Never again. The worst Mayor since I have lived in San Diego more than 20 years. He is a career politician with his own agenda. He doesn’t represent his constituents and blatantly lies. From his horrific handling of the homeless crisis to his “ never met a developer or developer contribution” he didn’t like and is actively destroying our neighborhood and quality of life, to complete management incompetence with dealings like Ash Street. We need to figure a way to make this arrogant loser a one-term mayor. Please step up and get rid of Todd Gloria.
