Reflections and Predictions by the Widder Curry

By Judi Curry

As I look back over this past year, I am so dissatisfied with my lack of accomplishments.  In the past I have written books, been active in many organizations, attended classes, etc.  This year I didn’t write a book, and with only the brief thought of beginning cookbook #4, I let that thought pass.  But there are some things that I am thankful for.

I have a new grandchild – number 19 – and she’s adorable.  My grandson graduated college with his B.A, and was hired at his first choice here in San Diego.

I met a person that  has relieved the loneliness and depression I have suffered from for the past twelve years.  I do not have any of the after effects from COVID, and I have had all three shots so if I should be exposed again my case will be milder than if I hadn’t had the injections.

I am thankful that my daughter finally got to go to Australia to see her grandchildren, and have high hopes that they will return to America in 2022.

But 2021 was not without anguish and emotional pain.  I lost several dear friends and relatives.  Some were to COVID; some were due to cancer; some were due to heart problems.  I have several good friends that are sick right now battling for their lives.  My best friend is in the hospital as I write this.  Some were expected; some were shockers.

And when I speak of “shock” I am shocked at the number of people that I know that are “anti-vaxers”.  I remember as a young child lining up in the cafeteria at school to get my polio vaccine and even though I knew it would hurt, I could hardly wait to have it.  I remember the pictures of the iron lungs as prevalent then as the pictures of the people with COVID today in the hospital.

I am shocked at the parents that are out protesting against the vaccine.  As a former teacher I would not want to have an unvaccinated student in my classroom.  My husband Bob got polio when he was student teaching. He was one of the lucky ones in that only one leg atrophied and that side was always weaker. But he could still walk and even though one leg and foot were different sizes than the others, he managed to do many of the things he had done before polio.  He got it from a student in his classroom.  That was before Salk developed the vaccine.

I am hopeful that robo calls will cease in 2022.  While I am writing this I received 5 robo calls – my car warranty; painting my house; social security; the bank has detected fraud on my VISA card – I checked with the bank. Not true.  Even a supposed call from Google telling me that my account has not been updated.  That’s right, because I don’t have an account with Google!

I’m concerned with something else that had never entered my mind before.

That is the dirt in large venue settings.  Steve, my new friend, loves ice hockey.  He has season tickets to the Gulls games and there are many, many games played at the Sports Arena.  We have second row seats behind the goal.  One Friday night the person in the first row was having trouble putting on his glove so he took out the lining and threw it on the ground.  Wednesday night we had another game and the glove lining was still on the ground!

A few nights later Steve noticed a piece of food on the ground by the seat in front of us.  Laughingly he said that he would look for it the next time we went to the game – 4 days later – to see if it was still there.  It was!  We get an evaluation from the Gulls after every game asking what we liked, what could change, etc.  Twice I have written about the lack of cleanliness but have never received an answer. (No surprise.)

We were looking forward to going to the game last Friday to see if any cleaning had been done, but the game was cancelled, as was the game Monday night so do not know what to expect at the next game.  There is not enough being done to prevent this disease.

I am still so puzzled and concerned about the people that refuse to believe that Biden won the presidency.  The time, energy and monies that are going into proving that he did not is a mystery.  Those supporting Trump – and there are members of my own family that still do – keep perpetuating this ridiculous idea, and hatred and loathing is getting worse.  Trump unleashed the hatred in this country that is so prevalent today.

The hatred shown to the minorities is nauseating.  My foreign students are afraid to walk into a mall, or a movie, etc. unless they are accompanied by an “American looking” person.  The graffiti that is showing up all over the place exposing hatred is not the America that I grew up in.  I fear for my grandchildren because some of them will have mixed blood.  What kind of a life will they lead.

It is scary to think that trump is going to run for president again. It is even more scary to think that he might win.  It is scary to think that there are so many people that do not do research to find out the truth; that are content regurgitating the things they hear on FOX News or other right-wing stations and believe it without question.

It is scary to think of those people that have been elected to office voting for their beliefs, not what the constitution allows. It is even scarier to think of the Supreme Court and their cockeyed beliefs and voting their way instead of looking at what the constitution says.  How can grown people, intelligent people, although that is questionable, make decisions that will affect millions of others based on their religious beliefs instead of the rights and regulations of the constitution?

So what do I see happening in 2022?  Unfortunately, not a hell of a lot. In fact, I think it will get a lot worse before it gets any better:

The Supreme Court will continue to enact right-wing laws; will make decisions they have no business making, such as abortion and the religious conservatives will revel in those decisions.

There will be more mass shootings as nothing is done about gun control; there will be more people dying of COVID because of the political influence instead of the scientific one; the legislature will continue giving themselves raises while Americans find themselves with less and less; large corporations will still buy the legislators who will, in turn, vote for those corporations rather than for the people.

Do I see anything good coming next year?

Well, I will have a new grandson in a few short weeks – #20.  My grand kids that were kidnapped to Australia 10 years ago may return here; wages will go up, but, unfortunately that extra money will not be able to buy any more than now, and probably less.  Maybe trump will be indicted and America can get back on the right track, but that will take years before we travel down that road.  Climate change may finally be addressed, and let’s hope it isn’t too late to save the planet.

In my opinion, 2022 looks bleak.  But the sun will shine through in places, and I hope we can gleam onto those rays long enough to have a safe, happy, new year.  I’m looking forward to 2023!

Right there with you, Judi. The outlook isn’t promising. My only comfort is knowing that things never turn out as we expect them, good or bad.

Would be curious to know what good things happened in 2021 and what good things will happen in 2022.

Kidnapped??

Reply

Judi December 28, 2021 at 6:27 pm

Yes Chris. The children were kidnapped to Australia by their father 9 years Ago. He is from Australia and took them without permission. At the age of 12 the children can decide where they want to live. Hopefully the court will go by their wishes

Chris January 1, 2022 at 1:43 pm

Wow Judi I had no idea about that. Hope that all works out.

Thanks, Chris. We are hoping so also. IF the court listens to the children they will be back next year. It is a big “IF”…..
Happy New Year.

Many good people are still doing good things here and across the nation as we put up with COVID and Trump.

The pragmatic part of me absolutely agrees with you, the cynic sees worse to come, but the optimist still watches the sunset every evening and talks to crows, gulls, and Parrots when they come by.

I’m looking forward to 2023 also. I just hope the idjits with the firecrackers aren’t out making noise and making my dog bark his head off.
Happy New Year!

I see in today’s news that COVID cases have increased 263% in California over the last two weeks and 1056% in Florida (where my family members live). It is hard not to say to Judi “I agree” when her overall message is that it is hard to change what people think once they believe what they think, and there is no easy solution to that scenario. Thank you Judi, for helping us to figure all of this out.

A great analogy trending on Twitter in response to those who think it’s a dunk to say “Both the vaccinated and the unvaccinated can catch COVID”: a doctor responded, “Both Serena Williams and I can play tennis.”

Pretty gloomy outlook there for the most part, Judy. Unfortunately I’ve been thinking along the same lines…but I tend to be far less of an optimist than you usually are!

Like WWII which was just WWI Part 2, what I see and hear is just Civil War Part 2 and ‘The South Shall Rise Again’ kind of theme running all through it. The racism, violence, and those flags… But Trump is just a symptom of the rot that is so deeply embedded in this country. We have never dealt realistically with our past, historically or emotionally. It’s all been buried and hidden away never to be spoken of. Reagan was the president that really let the hate back out, and if you’ll remember those campaign buttons of him & HWbush with the ‘Let’s Make America Great Again’ words printed on them, you can see where Trump stole it. Trump is just Reagan on steroids. Both rather unintelligent racist liars willing to do the bidding of the extremely wealthy that run this country for profit.

And the so-called ‘corporate neoliberal democrat’ presidents we’ve had since Reagan certainly went to no great pains to remove the stain on our national psyche. Pres. Eisenhower, though he didn’t fight against it while in office, at least warned of the Military/Industrial(Congressional)Complex as he left. Not many really listened…and here we are.

Racism/other-ism has always been a horrible part of our species behavior.
___
As for Covid, honestly we have been extremely lucky so far. Really, we have! A very low death rate (compared to Bubonic Plague!) and not an extreme infection rate-though with the variant Omicron that has certainly changed. If we don’t vaccinate the world we could easily see a variant that combines worse. With Africa at just 4% vaxxed, the 8 billion two-legged virus incubators walking around could easily see much much worse. Omicron is just a warm-up.

My ‘dead of covid’ list hit 21 in December with my native local artist friend Govedare, and one of my former students down in Chico called me the day after Xmas saying he just home-tested positive and what should he do? He still calls me his ‘sensei’ but I’m more of a Kapuna at this point, and, like in July when I talked with him about the science of vaccines and he vaxxed, I advised and he was going to an official test station at a local hospital the next morning before he went to work. I haven’t heard a word since. Not good. As mid-late 30s yr olds are now dying I am trying not to worry because at least he is vaxxed…the odds are better he’ll live through an infection. I still worry as he was waiting for his booster shot.
___
As for the unSupreme Court full of hacks and RWNJs that are unqualified to be a meter maid writing parking tickets, I agree that we are in deep doo-doo with those clowns. I have no hope there whatsoever as there is too much concentrated power in their hands, and lifetime appointments means decades of nasty brutish behavior are ahead of us. Just like when Wbush was installed as president in 2000 by the unScotus’, I agree that this will only get uglier with a court as mentally diseased as this one.
___
One thing you made me glad of is that you’ve met somebody to be around. Being alone isn’t easy. Cherish the time but you already know that! After 18 years living alone since filing for divorce and moving from those California mountains to these N/E WA mountains, it’s just the dogs (and now a tigerkitty who showed up at the door starving a few months ago) that keep me company. As my house has been closed to the public, not teaching Kenpo self-defense lessons in the dojo, not playing music at the bar jams, and not standing in a packed ski resort lift lines because…well, covid, (DUH!); I’ve been pretty solitary this last 18 months and that’s pretty hard for a gregarious old OB surfer dude to handle at times. I did go to a native Thanks dinner in November (no pilgrims allowed) where we were all vaxxed and isolating which was wonderful after the massive Delta surge hit this area starting in August. It was SO NICE to sit and converse with intelligent people without that lurking fear of ‘who they been around?’ in the back of my head. The hosts were the 80 yr old PhD native woman who endorsed my book and her husband, and getting to sit and talk with them and family in-person was just wonderful. It was a great afternoon and evening.
___
But like you I also haven’t been able to get going on things I want done. Two new books I’ve been working on are…languishing after the one I published last year (if you’re interested ask Frank to borrow his copy!). I just can’t seem to motivate for some reason. One, a pre-k age picture book that I took all the photos for is mostly finished but I can’t find the simple wording that fits them. The other is much larger and much more involved but…I scratch at it now and then. Hopefully it’ll come…

As for your 2020 predictions, yeah, well, big sigh. You really don’t want to read the science on climate collapse that I’m reading. Read Wadhams, read Glickson, Blendell, others if you feel the need. Two things to watch are the Arctic methane releases and the coming final summer total melt-off that is about to happen. As the Prime Minister of Finland said “We lose the Arctic we lose civilization.”

I read this somewhere:

Live every day as if it is your last.
Live every day as if you’ll live forever.
___
And Google robo-calls every single day to tell me I haven’t updated my shop information. Well, no, I NEVER did anyway! Nor do I buy anything from Amazon or Walmart or ever joined FaceBlech. I do have some standards left even if the country is swirling around the toilet bowl fractured into fragments full of vicious bickering bullsh*tters. As Washington State prepares for full-0n Battlefield Triage they call ‘crisis care’ expected in the next two weeks, the best thing I can do is…wish everybody a better 2022 than they experienced in 2021. Stay vaxxed, wear a mask, avoid crowds, learn critical thinking skills, do something fun every day.

Best to all!

Hi Seal, It is always so wonderful to get your perspective on things, because you are so calm and knowledgeable and present yourself so well. My friends with Covid has just risen – again – and listening to the ones that are supposed to know what to do about it are floundering in their answers. Not a very secure feeling!

I hope you have a safe and enjoyable New Year. Maybe we will both finish our books in the next year! Judi

My sew shop website: http://www.boardwarm.com and in a couple of local stores. Paypal or mail a check. I ship USPS Media Mail.

It’s 252 pages, 53 photos/images, $19.95 & tax/ shipping. My book is selling mostly by word of mouth. The point of writing it was never about making money but you’ll realize that when you read it.

A non-corporate bookstore in Spokane has shown interest (they support local writers), and also Spokane radio station KYRS ‘Thin Air’ Community Radio (the OBRAG for this area) has people who read it and want me to come on their Friday afternoon ‘Page Turner’ radio show to talk about it. The DJs are passing a couple copies around and one’s wife snatched one up, read it through, and took it to her Spokane book club before he even got to read a single page. That was pretty funny and morale boosting!

My 2nd Kenpo teacher who runs the San Diego AKKA studio up on El Cajon Blvd. sent an email at Christmas:

“Hey Seal, I am 80% through the book, I think it’s great, weird some times, but I really like it!”

Hell of a compliment coming from him! But he’s correct, it is a little weird at times but not for the people that were there when the main story happened. Many have gone to those folks in NorCal.

100% non-fiction.

Thanks, Judi. Yours will be the third to San Diego. One even went to New Zealand where the shipping was more expensive than the book.

Been snowing hard up here. Two feet on the roofs of the house and shop now. Spent a couple hours blowing snow to the property gate yesterday and paths between the woodshed and house and to the shop with the 13hp Arien’s 32″ rake monster machine. Still kicked my butt! Getting kind of old to do this but…nobody else will, ya know?

This morning I woke up and another 8″ had fallen! More snow here than in the last few years (far below what used to be normal, though). Glad I pulled wood into the house yesterday…

NOTE: When you go to the book page, hold the cursor over the picture and then tab the ‘MORE’ button to see other published works links. And the home page has the 3 links to the Lunch Counter Trilogy riversurfing novella. All free reads!

We have gotten through two very rough years now. That’s quite an accomplishment that we should NEVER undervalue. Although there will probably be a few more bad months we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. In the long run we are going to turn this negative into many positives, and that’s what life is all about.

Thank you for the compliment, Judy, and glad that I make sense at least sometimes!

You, too, by the way. Maybe we will both finish our next books this coming year? It is SO much work. And do ask Frank if he’ll loan you his copy of Massacre Sites; Working for the Dead if you have the inclination to read it! I shipped one off yesterday so a trickle are still selling after 16 months.
___
It was degrees below 0’F last night but I didn’t walk out to the mercury thermometer hanging on the north side of the woodshed that goes lower than the house one which stops at zero. Too cold to bother with, but I’m betting maybe -8 or -10’F?

It’s 8’F at the moment. Cold enough! More snow due tomorrow…and it’ll warm up when it does. May be firing up the snowthrower as another foot will clog the road to the property gate even in 4×4. Still well below what used to be normal for this time of year. Haven’t fired up the snowthrower in two winters…
___
Update: my former student called, he’s definitely down with covid probably Omicron as he hasn’t lost taste or smell. Said attempts at food tastes awful. Mostly sleeping the last five days which is good, no need for hospitalization. His younger sister the nurse (also one of my former students) has also tested positive this week but it sounds like Delta not Omicron as she lost taste/smell again. Her 2nd go-round, she caught the original strain last year. Both are home quarantining though the sis blocked her bedroom off due to two young kids and husband. Vaccines are doing their job keeping people from hospitalization, and he will be getting his booster after he gets better.

The woman jeweler who is fixing my necklace (the catch ring wore through after 40 yrs of wearing) had her entire family also go down. She’s vaxxed as are her relatives but said over the phone that she feels like she’s been hit by a truck. She is on the mend, too, which is good after a solid ten days of misery. Another ‘mild’ case due to vaccination. At least she was able to call to apologize for not having it repaired yet. Told her not to worry.

Coming up on Pandemic Year 3…

BRRRR. I guess I had better stop complaining at 49! This COVID thing is so puzzling. You hear one scientist say one thing; then another says something else. At times it is difficult to talk to the anti-vaxers because of the conflict of opinions. However, there is no denying the numbers of deaths that have occurred, and the numbers of deaths that are still happening. Can’t help but wonder what this year is going to be like! You stay well, because I can hardly wait to read your next book. And I will definitely ask Frank to loan me his copy. Love reading your comments, and not just on my page. Be safe.
