The Saga of the Widder Curry’s Covid -19
By Judi Curry
I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you that sent me prayers, positive thoughts, greeting cards, flowers, soups, foods, magazines, funny sayings, etc. during these past 22 days that I have been wiped out by Covid.
NEVER in my entire lifetime, which is substantial, have I ever been so weak, so indisposed as I have been the past three weeks.
When I say that I had no energy even to lift myself off the commode, that is no exaggeration. I needed help, each and every time. And do you want to know the strange thing about this disease? I had a “mild case.” I never had an elevated temperature; I never had low oxygen; my blood pressure remained normal throughout the entire 22 days.
I just had no energy. None. Nada. And one of the worst sensations I had in the 22 days was that my bones were on fire! Truly! They felt like there were flames emanating from them. All day. All night. For 18 days!
And how did it start?
I had a crew come in, all masked, and all checked for Covid, to replace my forced air furnace. All of the men wore masks from day one (Monday) until day six (Saturday) when the foreman of the job called me with some “bad news”. It seems that two of his crew members had sore throats. They had all been tested for Covid at the start of the job; all were fine, but on this Saturday two men tested positive for Covid.
And… I was already beginning to feel like I had a cold – a little congestion, and I noticed that when I took out the black trash can I had trouble navigating the pathway back into the backyard because I was out of breath. Things went downhill from there. I could barely walk from my bedroom to my kitchen. I had to make a stop in the living room and dining room before I could pour myself a glass of water. Although I could still taste food, it tasted like nothing I had ever eaten before – maybe like “spoiled fish.” I found that my gag reflex had never been so active, and just putting liquid in my mouth triggered the reflex.
I am fortunate in that I have three daughters that could help out.
One daughter, Lynn, had just had the two injections because she is a health care worker and it was a precautionary measure for her. She drove down from Orange County and stayed with me for the first 4 days, giving me food, helping me get off the commode, getting back to bed, etc. When she left my youngest daughter, Stephanie, came and spent 4 days with me. She took over where Lynn left off, and she and I had some discussions about the Pedialytes I was not ingesting – tasted terrible – the liquids I was not drinking, etc.
But I realize that this was all for my own good, and she wanted to make sure that I was receiving nourishment for the healing process. She kept telling me “what a good girl I was” to finish 2 ounces of liquid, as she kept refilling the damn glass.
Michele, my eldest, is a government employee and was under quarantine. Although she physically was unable to help me because of the quarantine, she did the shopping; made yummy food; and kept bolstering all of us. I don’t know how many trips she made to make sure that I had plenty of soup to drink; Pedialyte to drink, etc. It was truly a “family effort.”
So, how am I now?
That’s the interesting thing. I am still very, very weak. I still cannot move comfortably from the bedroom to the kitchen, but I can get from one room to the other easier than before. I am eating my meals – Cream of Wheat – in the morning; cottage cheese in the afternoon along with a banana; soup and salad at dinner at the dining room table. I try to clear off my plate and bring it into the kitchen, but even this is proving to be taxing.
But flavors are coming back; the Cream of Wheat brought back so many memories from my youth; the dressing on the Antipasto Salad that I had from Rosario’s was heavenly. The vinegar just strong enough to vitalize my taste buds; the homemade soup that Stephanie and Shawna made tasted so nice going down.
But I have been writing this little thank you for the past 3 hours. I can’t follow the thoughts all the way through. I have to stop; leave my desk, and come back in a half an hour or so – I just don’t have the energy to complete the thoughts. BUT I AM GETTING BETTER! I am getting stronger. I can put one thought ahead of the other just like I can put one foot in front of the other.
I’m not over it yet – but I am closer. My voice is stronger; my step is not as hesitant; and I will beat this very soon. I could not have done it without all of you, however, and from the very bottom of my heart, I send you sincere thanks. You all honestly made the difference. I’m among the living again – albeit not as feisty as usual, but it’s coming! Your encouragement pulled me through. For this I will always be eternally grateful.

Again, thank you for all your positive thoughts and prayers.
So grateful you are on the road to recovery. What terrible and frightening news that you had this horrific virus.
I’m happy that you are back with “the living” and survived this plague. :-)
How did I know there would be a story about this if you survived. Looks like this whole chinese virus thing isn’t that bad after all if you can survive it.
Re Allan Moser…i hope you dont get it and if you do i hope you have family to help you get through it else prolly a lot harder to beat…it takes a strong will and a good reason to live to beat sometning that knocks you on your butt, regardless of the source. but if she could beat it that gives hope for many. i knew a moser once…in high school…real sweet girl. any relation? i’d be surprised.
Allan, I’m honestly surprised you can grt through the day in one piece or even operate a doorknob.
Good one, Chris.
I think the editor dude needs to deal with you, Moser, like Twitter did with the LOSER. I almost have to wonder that you are smarter than I thought to manage so many offensive things in so few words.
Moser’s comment slipped through while I watched the Senate impeachment trial. Sorry about that to you Judi who he insulted. I made an adjustment so his comments cannot be published.
Did you even read the article? Not that bad?! And have you heard about Long Covid, the many many who had “mild” cases and have been left with months if not years of physical after-effects. As someone else wrote, I do hope you don’t get it but if you do, I’ll bet you change your tune.
Allan – how did you know there would be an article about it? Perhaps because you know that people care about Judi? Or that are interested in her experience? Or have asked her to write about it? I’m sure you weren’t seriously ask how you knew, but there are many people who genuinely care about her and will be happy to read about her experience and her recovery.
And the Chinese virus comment? Other than being mean spirited and ignorant is an insult to everyone who has died, lost someone, is suffering the lingering effects of Covid 19, as well as all of the Healthcare providers who have been treating it since day 1.
Trump continually refers to the virus as “Chinese”. Too bad that ignorance persists among those with no Covid experience.
That was a great article Judi…glad to hear your story
BRAVA! Judi. I sent all the prayers I could muster your way! Will thank the angels today. Got my second COVID-19 virus shot today and that I consider as.a miracle on par with your own.
SECRET —SLEEP! Lots of sleep. And God bless your daughters. Wonderful example of what makes us all a better people. Thanks for the article. I have been bugging Frank about your well being for weeks.
Be safe. Sleep well and pleasant dreams
Thank you so much. There is no doubt in my mind that your prayers and thoughts is what helped pull me out of this insidious disease.
Judi, I’m glad you’re ok. I had no idea you were even going through this. Very scary indeed. You have my prayers.
Thanks Chris. This is an experience I hope no one else has to go through!
Allan Moser: Based on your comment I guess we should re-name the 1918/20 so-called ‘Spanish’ Influenza Pandemic that killed an estimated 50-100 MILLION people around the world (out of a population of 1.1Billion, 5 to 10%!!) as the ‘United States Flu’ Pandemic since it has been traced back to a pig farm in Kansas? Makes as much sense as your statement.
Oh wait! Since the US Government has been FUNDING that Chinese Wuhan lab for years to the tune of millions of taxpayer dollars, and US scientists have been shuttling back and forth to it doing experiments for years also, you might want to contemplate how that should affect the label you wrote.
Oh, and since we’re on the subject of re-naming, since Trump in his own words acknowledged in January 2020 that SARS II CoVid-19 was going to be really really bad and then did NOTHING for a freaking year but tell people to inject bleach (Clorox will clear it out, baby!! Or maybe drink a bottle of Lysol?) and that it was going to go away “like a miracle” or it was a ‘Hoax,’ I really think the new name should be the TRUMP VIRUS. More dead in this country that all the US soldiers killed in WWII. Think about THAT, Allan, and then do a search for that released info about what Trump knew in January…but you won’t I’m sure. Cognitive dissonance can be so painful so it’s best that you avoid reality as long as possible, eh?

Judy, due to sales of my book the last three months to many of my old friends and co-workers from the concert scene in NorCal who were there when the story happened, I’ve found out that the 2 deaths I knew of has now turned into 14 dead friends of Covid. And I just found out from a cousin that a paternal relative in Iowa died of it. That makes 15 known dead just in my little circle. Many more have gotten sick, and some hardly got sick at all.
There are others, including locally, that are suffering from massive side effects who ‘recovered’ including what the neuroscientists are saying is inflammation of the brain causing memory problems (visible in MRI scans called ‘white matter’ of the brain), along with the aches and absolute loss of physical strength to walk two blocks down the short streets of Chewelah without doubling over trying to breathe. Or leaning on a building gasping. Former students (one a nurse in Chico) are not just forgetting things they’ve known for years but are having a very hard time processing and retaining new information. The nickname is spreading; ‘Brain Fog.’
There’s also info that has come out that people that had mild cases, 60-70% of them are showing visible lung damage equivalent of a 2 pack a day tobacco smoker. That came out from an Xray doctor woman in Texas a few weeks ago who has been taking the lung scans of thousands. Those that got really sick and were bad enough to be hospitalized the percentage goes up to 80-90%.
Permanent scarring of the lungs of US citizens, Allan, from the Trump Virus.
Last week I had a Native woman I talk to a lot (works at the tribe-owned SpokoFuel gas station) when I told her about the recent death of the Iowa relative said she’s lost 4 immediate family members from it. So far. And now mutated variants from South Africa, Brazil, and two from England are circulating that are so much more infectious…that the Astro-Zeneca vaccine has been tested against the SA one and it doesn’t work. They are the 2nd Wave, just like 1918 all over again. There was a 3rd Wave, too, a hundred years ago.
Judy, I wish you well and the ability to recover as best as your body can. We’re getting old and I’m sure dang aware of how hard that is! I haven’t let anybody in my house since Feb 2020, an entire year of just the dogs and me inside. People come over and we’re outside apart but now it’s winter and this morning was -6’F so I don’t expect to be putting out the beach chairs….it does get lonely, no doubt about it.
Best to you, Judy.

Thank you so much. I still have trouble believing just how weak I still am. As Roy said below – even watching television was an effort. People have commented to me that I made no reference to the things that took place in January – the 6th; the 21st, etc. I just didn’t have the energy to even turn on the television. Very strange feelings! I appreciate your comments. Thx.
Pulling for you all the way.
Judi,
What a frightful description. I didn’t know one could be so miserable with a mild case. Glad to know that you’re progressing well. You’re fortunate to have daughters willing and able to step in for assistance when needed. I get my second shot on the 17th and am looking forward to being able to look forward with anticipation rather than trepidation.
Sorry to read this, Ms. Widder, and may your chi return! I hope all who’ve read this understand that the March wave approaches- double masks, gloves, stay home, and no one allowed inside that is outside the ‘pod’! CDC is chronically late with their guidance- they should have emphasized double masks 2 months ago, among other things. Like defensive driving, vigilance is not enough b/c who knows what the other person is doing. Your story is a classic example. Best wishes.
Thanks Ernie and Retired Botanist – I pray that neither of you succumb to this dreadful disease! And I don’t mean “succumb” – I mean – I hope that neither of you get it!
So sorry to hear of your illness and very, very glad you are on the mend. Your story has helped us. Our furnace went out this year. If I was wondering if we should have it fixed or replaced before, I certainly am not now. Thank you for sharing what happened.
May your strength return quickly and completely.
Nancy and Stewart are so glad that you are on the mend, Judi. She’s a wonderful woman.

In mid December I also contracted COVID, from a construction workers on large project on my own property (it started prior to COVID). I was always fully masked, as were the workers. But I got it anyway.
I am in my mid 60’s and my experience was similar to Judi’s. According to some my case was also mild, but my doctor prescribed steroids when it suddenly getting worse on day 7/8. I’m positive this prevented a much worse situation, but I did end up at the emergency room at the emphatic request of my doctor, but I thankfully wasn’t admitted. For several 3 to 4 weeks I also had an inability to do anything, meaning anything. I described it by simply saying I couldn’t watch TV because it was way too much work. While my husband contracted if from me, he had a very mild case and was fully functional the entire time, therefore able to take care of me.
I am fully fine now, but it was a wild ride, completely unlike anything I have experienced before. Stay safe everybody, its really easy to get this monster even if you are being careful.
Glad to hear you are mending, Judi. All the best! After all of that discretionary restraint regarding the wedding to be felled by a furnace installation is the pitts.
Coincidentally, I finally lost patience with the VA after almost a full year of dodging this virus and went online Wednesday morning and made an appointment (based on being over 65) at CSUSM for the following day at 9:30. Easy as all get out.
I arrived at 9:15 and by 10:10 my 15 minute observation period was over and I have an appointment for my second dose.
So, if you qualify and want the vaccine, there should be no problem here in San Diego County; the operation at CSU San Marcos was very efficient and actually pleasant.
68 years old and I once again have a “shot card” . . . this latter part of my life has been one irony after another!
Glad to hear you are on the mend. It certainly feels like just having weeks of your life just erased. Proper sleep and diet is probably the best way to fight it, which can be hard to have discipline on when you feel like death and are stuck at home.
That is nice that the contractor had the courtesy to alert you. I suspect most wouldn’t. I work in construction, and in many occupied homes, and I would be surprised if many contractors routinely test their employees. My experience is tests only happen they come forward with symptoms, which of course is a little too late.
Judi!
Oh dear! I just discovered this and am sending you healing thoughts and Reiki! Please let me know if there’s anything I can do to help you! You have my email and phone number still, I hope.

Hi Judy,
I’m so happy you’re on your way to recovery. I can’t begin to fathom what you endured.
Wishing you a New Year overflowing with good health and happiness.
Take care and stay strong.
Judi,
So stunned that Covid found you but not surprised that you are kicking it’s ass! I remember those Job Corps days. You don’t take any crap, lol. Keep kicking it’s butt!
Duff Roberts! STUNNED that you found me. I left San Diego Job Corps in 1999; I don’t think we have talked since then – although that isn’t saying that I haven’t talked about you! Thanks for the “advice!” I refuse to let this get me when Job Corps couldn’t! How are you? Where are you? After this is all over we should get together for old time sake! Be safe.
