The Ocean Beach Town Council has a new president – Mark Winkie, formerly the vice-president. Winkie was elected by the Board of Directors due to the unanticipated resignation of Marcus Turner as president; Turner has accepted new out-of-town employment and will no longer be able to carry out the functions of the president.
Other changes have occurred also – causing a leadership shake-up. Priscilla Turner, Marcus’ spouse, also resigned from the board and as correspondence secretary. Marcus has accepted employment in Long Beach – where he grew up (see this interview) and where his parents and several siblings still live – and Priscilla is moving back there with him.
Jill Kent was elected by the board to be vice-president. Jon Carr was elected to be the new correspondence secretary, Priscilla’s previous position.
And seemingly unrelated to the Turners’ resignations from the board, Nicole Ueno has also resigned from the board. No reasons were stated in the press statement for her departure, but it’s commonly known Nicole has recently accepted full-time employment.
Two of the vacated seats on the board were filled with temporary appointments by a quorum of the board: existing residential members Daniel Grofer and Stacie Woehrie were chosed to take those seats. All three vacated seats on the board caused by the resignations will be up for election in the January-February membership elections.
All these changes were announced in a press statement sent out today.

Congratulations to Mark. One of the reasons (the main one) for changing the OBTC election cycle was to avoid the new board members to have to deal with all the mighty holiday stuff and events. well, Mark – here you are. Sorry.
I think one of the reasons there is such little turnout at the OB Town Council meetings is that a lot of residents don’t know the dates and place of the meetings. The $200. spent to advertise the Council in the Christmas parade could be better spent on a permanent banner installed across Sunset Cliffs or Newport Ave. advertising the time, place, and regular dates of the monthly meetings, and asking residents to come. Although not permanent, this is done for the Chili Kick Off and it gets a lot of response.
