Sanctuaries in a Sea of Oil

July 26 is the deadline for public comments to defend our Marine Monuments and National Marine Sanctuaries!

By David Helvarg / Blue Notes #159

In late April President Trump issued his “America First Offshore Energy” Executive Order that, along with threatening to put an end to the only significant safety regulation resulting from BP’s 2010 Deepwater Horizon blowout disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, also ordered a review of 27 national monuments that had been declared or enlarged over the last 20 years. He then doubled down with instructions to reconsider recently expanded marine monuments and sanctuaries.

The Ocean Beach Project Review Committee has a huge agenda with four projects before it, this Wednesday, July 19th. The review panel – a sub-committee of the OB Planning Board – has projects on Voltaire, Sunset Cliffs, Narragansett and the controversial Abbott and Muir condo project to take up, and on which to make recommendations to the full board. The full board meets Wednesday, August 2nd. The review panel meeting takes place at the OB Recreation Center, 4726 Santa Monica Ave., and begins at 6pm.

2150 1/3 Abbott St. – Controversial Project Downgrades to 3 Condos

Number 4 on the agenda, but by far the most controversial project, is the permit to build 3 residential condos for a total of 6730 square feet, on that large, empty 7500 square foot lot at the intersection of Abbott and Muir.

Calif Supreme Court Rules If Property Owners Build Sea Wall, Permit Restrictions Apply

Frank Gormlie  July 17, 2017  2 Comments on Calif Supreme Court Rules If Property Owners Build Sea Wall, Permit Restrictions Apply

In a legal decision that may affect Ocean Beach and Point Loma land owners who own property right on the cliffs and who have built seawalls, the California Supreme Court has just issued a ruling about the responsibilities of sea bluff property owners and those seawalls.

Closely watched by California environmental groups as well as by advocates of expanded property rights up and down the coast, the California Supreme Court, in a unanimous opinion, ruled against two property owners who own adjoining cliff side lots in Encinitas, and who had sued the California Coastal Commission over the Commission’s authority over seawalls.

An Open Letter to Whoever Stole My OB Bike Last Week

Dave Rice  July 17, 2017  11 Comments on An Open Letter to Whoever Stole My OB Bike Last Week

Hi, Buddy!

You must be feeling awful clever right about now, having made off with my shiny, precious toy. I’m sure it took not only daring but a remarkable measure of stealth to find your way into my apartment building’s garage, defeating not only the locked access doors but also the 24/7 surveillance cams with what I imagine must have been a sizeable set of bolt cutters to cleave through my lock so efficiently. Kudos!

Also, thanks for not scratching my wife’s car while you conducted your theft – the foresight and careful touch with which you extracted my ride is much appreciated, since I’m sure damage to her bumper would’ve been much costlier than the spoils of your hard work was worth to me, in terms of dollars and cents anyway.

But that’s not entirely what my bike was worth. You see, even though it may have looked shiny and new, …

Restaurant Review

Jake & Eggs
1774 Sunset Cliffs
Ocean Beach, CA 92107
619-419-1207
Open 8-1 – Wednesday – Sunday

By Judi Curry

When this restaurant closed down a few months ago I was sorry that I had not patronized it more often. I was thrilled to see that it reopened in May, and when Marilyn came into town from Ohio today I decided to go back and see if it was as good now as it was originally. I am happy to say it is!

While not a standard breakfast menu, there are plenty of items to choose from. And, for those of you that need gluten free meals, almost all of the items have a “gf” designation.

The menu starts out with French Toast ($10); and goes to Short Rib Machaca Burrito ($11); Sweet Potato Hash is $12 as is Biscuits and Gravy. There is a Kimchi Fried Rice ($14); Chilaquiles Stack for $13;

The Wilderness of Silence : Summer Chronicles #2

Jim Miller  July 17, 2017  0 Comments on The Wilderness of Silence : Summer Chronicles #2

Our noise is everywhere. Just try to sit for a moment in your house and experience a moment without some kind of artificial noise, whether it be passing traffic, the sound of your neighbor’s television or stereo or the now nearly ever-present buzzing of somebody’s ear buds.

But let’s say you want to head out beyond the sprawling reach of the homogenous exurban landscape, past even the glow of the Walmart on the edge of Small Town, Anywhere to what is left of the great American wilderness.

Any peace there?

Apparently not, according to the most recent research on our never-ending din.

Our Summer Appeal for Donations – Keep the Press Local and Free

The OB Rag‘s Summer Fundraiser starts today!

For the last couple of years, we’ve held two fundraisers a year, in the summer and in the fall.

Today, our goal is to reach $1,000 in donations and contributions from our readers and supporters, over this weekend and into next week. Last November, we surpassed our goal of $2,000, so now we’re not asking for as much.

Now that the president of the United States has called the press, “the enemy of the people” and charges of “fake news” are all around us, the folks of OB and Point Loma (and the rest of San Diego as well) need the OB Rag more than ever.

Questions and Some Answers about Ocean Beach Re-Model Project on 4600 Block of Orchard

Frank Gormlie  July 13, 2017  1 Comment on Questions and Some Answers about Ocean Beach Re-Model Project on 4600 Block of Orchard

Neighbors to the remodel project going on in the middle of the 4600 block of Orchard have been asking questions about the construction work.

Ever since Melissa and Richard Chester began talking to and asking for help from their neighbors and the OB community at large about the project at 4651 and 4653 Orchard, interest in it has increased significantly. For instance, since the OB Rag included the project as one of 3 developments that tell the story of gentrification in OB, hundreds of our readers picked up the story. The same article on the OB Rag facebook page reached nearly 1300 people.
