On Sunday, July 23rd, the OB Rag suffered an attack by a suspected bot originating from an IP address in the city of Irkutsk in the Russian Federation.
Between the hours roughly 8 am to 10 am, two articles in particular received the bulk of the hits (4700 hits in total), all coming from a single IP address.
This was not a more typical DDOS (dedicated denial of service) attack – which we have blockers for – but an electronic attack hitting the same post 4700 times over a 2 hour period, as mentioned. This barrage could have effectively cut off other readers from the site, but the security and sever performance weathered the storm.
One article, by Doug Porter, had the headline: “Innocent People Don’t Need Preemptive Pardons – Progressive Activist Calendar for San Diego: July 21- 31, 2017“, and the other article by Frank Gormlie, “The Right to Resist Foreign Intervention and Domestic Collaborators“, both involved Trump and Russia.

Or do you have a new fan of The Rag in Russia??!!
It’s pretty strange to see this, and to see the articles focused on by the Russian bot. But as Putin and now Trump’s Mooch say, if the Russians really did it, they’re so good that they wouldn’t been caught.
Some websites block all Russian, and Chinese IP ranges. If you look at the detailed stats you can tell the difference between people actually reading articles versus trying to hack the login page and such. When you see the hits and page views are close to the same number from an IP address that is one sign.
Well boys, I reckon this is it, toe to toe with the Ruskies.
Sorta feels like the Cold War again…
No, this is different; our beef is not with the Russian people.
Was our beef ever really with the Russian people, editordude? The beef is always between the people in charge of both countries, most people, even the Russians I am sure, would prefer the only beef out there be on a barbecue.
The beef is with Russian people if they are hockey fans. Canadian-Americans like myself have dual allegiances. It is important geopolitically that we beat the sneaky cossacks at ‘our’ sport. The spectacle of Putin playing with Russian ex-NHLers and scoring 8-goals was Kim Jong Un worthy. I’d like to see Putin suit up in a real game against some Canadians. Tiger Williams is Putin’s age. There is something worthy of coming together around the BBQ. :-P
Hawky? I’ve heard of this game somewhere but isn’t it an offshoot of boxing? Now, if there are any Russian surfers out there, well, then, bring ’em on!
Ever seen those guys with sticks skating on frozen water? If you’re in an OB bar you might catch a bit of a playoff game on TV before it’s turned off for Grapefruit League baseball. Foggy’s Notion on Rosecrans used to be a refuge for ex-pat Canadians to avoid horrendous actions of disrespect like that. It was a funky place – would have fit right in in OB.
Well, I’ve seen those guys on skates fighting on frozen water, is that it?
All kidding aside, I’ve been to a few hockey games, heck, I’ve even been to Canada, I went to college in central Michigan. I will say that these are lively events. And, I agree that it’s probably hard to get respect in a place like San Diego. Sorry to hear that the Canadian refuge on Rosecrans closed but, knowing San Diego, I bet there’s another ooout there somewhere, eh?
