OBTC newport ave picThe upcoming August 24th OB Town Council meeting could be very exciting and entertaining – and very invigorating – as the Town Council – in conjunction with the OB Planning Board – are both hosting what’s being billed as a a Visioning Workshop on Newport Avenue.

There will also be a forum to hear from the candidates running for election to the OB Town Council Board of Directors.  (It’s now too late to submit letters to be a candidate for the Board. Click here and here for more details on OBTC elections.)

Newport Avenue – the street itself – is getting a make-over by the city. So, at the Visioning Workshop for Newport Avenue, community leaders will facilitate a 30-40 minute workshop focused on examining the challenges and opportunities for OB’s principle commercial avenue.

The OBTC stated in the notice about the meeting, that following a brief analysis of the existing conditions, attendees will be able to submit suggestions for improvement involving

  • infrastructure,
  • circulation,
  • land-use,
  • environment,and community.

The suggestions will be collected and summarized, and the findings will be compiled into a report. This report will be used to facilitate a follow-up discussion with local Architects, Engineers, and Planners at a community event in October in partnership with the AIA San Diego’s Archtoberfest.

The goal of these workshops is to submit a document of the findings and recommendations to the City of San Diego identifying future Capital Improvement Projects on and around Newport Avenue that will make our community a more healthy, resilient, and sustainable neighborhood.

Also, on another issue entirely, the San Diego Free Press reports:

Area residents are planning on expressing their views to city representatives about the chopping down of the Torrey Pine on Saratoga Ave. at the OBTC meeting. Expect a lot of passion.

This meeting of the OBTC is on Wednesday, August 24th, at 7:00pm at the Masonic Hall (1711 Sunset Cliffs Boulevard).

Regular speakers at the OBTC meetings include local leaders, political, business, lifeguard, firefighter and law enforcement representatives, as well as members from all corners of the Ocean Beach community. Whether you’re a long-time OB-cean or just want to learn more about OB, all are welcome!

Here is the official agenda:

Visioning Newport Ave –

1. Make all sidewalk-encroaching businesses move themselves back, so as not to impede the sidewalks with structures full of iron fences, tables, stools, and the like. Anything on the sidewalk should be impermanent, if at all. Surely an enforced city ordinance could be put into play for this to happen?

2. Crack down on the too many bars and beer tasting joints – surely there is a way to limit their number.

3. Talk about real vision – squeeze the eyes and imagine some lovely spots for children – arcades, a min-vintage carousel/Merry-Go-round, and the like. Imagine “taking back” a fair share of OB for families. Start a little coalition for same – Beach Sweets, the Lighthouse – we need more for children to love.

4. And in the same vision department, imagine what’s missing that would enhance our town for all of us – an art film movie house, or a bookstore? How do we entice such entities to come here to O B?

5. Challenge city officials to join such a vision, instead of doing things that people in OB clearly do not want, such as installing police cameras on the beach with leftover city money and cutting down Torrey Pine trees.
