New OB Consignment Shop Hits the Ground Runnin’

OB Around town 6-11-14 Consignshop01aThere is a new consignment shop on Abbott Street these days and it appears the partners who own it hit the ground running. The Consignment Shack OB – located next to the laundry mat and where formerly Rocky’s Surf Shop existed, near the corner of Abbott and Muir, was able to move in fully blown because the partners own another larger store in La Mesa – way out there in East County.

But the partners have lived in OB for years.  Nancy Fiandaca was staffing the place the other day when I visited the shop.  She owns it along with Dani Fiandaca and Kelly McFall.

Nancy told me, “We’re from OB,” and she herself has lived here for 27 years.

They opened about a month and half ago and offer unusual furniture, art and household decor, particularly mid-century, vintage and “just cool stuff”, Nancy said.

Another store – a food market – had planned to open in the space and for 2 years they were improving the interior with new electrical, but then they checked into the permits they had to have, and had to quit their endeavor.  When the space became available, Nancy and friends snatched it up.

Nancy’s other location in La Mesa has been operating for 2 1/2 years – and they also run a shipping company, she said.  They were able to draw from the things they had there in order to stock the new place with its 1100 square feet of space.

About 45% of their wares are on consignment, Nancy said.  They’re especially looking to stock the “Shack” with things for Ocean Beach, as the community is a known market for first-time buyers of small-house and apartment furniture and decorations, as Nancy knows the residents here are not financially well-off.

They’re able to sell things cheaper, Nancy said, because their business has connections with brokers who purchase estate-sale items, thus they don’t have any emotional attachment to the items.

The basic consignment at her store, Nancy said, is 50-50, which is better than the 60/40 industry standard.

Nancy has a easy smile and laugh and seems to really enjoy what she does.  Go by and check out the new Shack and its cool stuff. Tell them you saw the article in the OB Rag and welcome them to the community.
